All-Natural Sex Enhancement Supplements Linked to Prescription Side Effects

By John Curran

sex enhancement pillsThe FDA and others have launched investigations into numerous “all-natural” sexual enhancement supplements and found that they include the active ingredients for several prescription drugs used to treat erectile dysfunction. Unfortunately, since these supplements do not carry the same warnings as those drugs, many men could be at risk for significant side effects.

For example, the “natural” erectile dysfunction supplement “Clalis” has the same active ingredient as Viagra, as do the supplements “Stiff Days” and “Libido Sexual Enhancer.” People who regularly watch TV and have seen commercials for Viagra or Cialis will know that both carry strange warnings regarding hypotension side effects.

However, the FDA also required label updates for both prescription medications because of a substantive number of adverse event reports regarding partial blindness or blurry vision as well as sudden hearing loss. In the case of extremely low blood pressure, the allegedly natural sexual enhancement supplements could prove fatal for those who are already taking nitrates and other medications to treat angina, a common condition for older men.

These adulterated supplements are likely to continue to be an issue because of the regulations Congress allows the FDA to administer. As long as the initial supplement ingredient list does not contain any banned or otherwise regulated substances, the FDA does not and cannot perform any pre-marketing testing.

In essence, any sexual enhancement supplement that includes illegal ingredients will put consumers at risk until the FDA receives enough reports that it can gauge is some testing. Even with those delays in mind, however, the agency still has dozens of products on its list of adulterated and dangerous sexual enhancement supplements.

Even women can obtain sex enhancing supplements that may also contain illegal or improperly listed ingredients. In both cases, it may make more sense for people looking to improve their sex lives to seek the guidance of a doctor or of a therapist before embarking on any sort of treatment plan.

In the meantime, many people who bought these products may not have realized they were in danger of partial blindness or sudden hearing loss, in some cases. Product liability lawyers are continuing investigations and may be able to assist you in the legal process to recover any damages you may deserve.
