asbestos exposure leads to mesotheliomaCancer caused by asbestos is a serious concern for industrial workers, with numerous former and current workers at risk for such cancers. Occupational exposure has caused many people to develop long term illnesses related to asbestos, with mesothelioma being one of the most infamous.

A couple from Connecticut say they are such victims, alleging their lives have been permanently changed by this deadly cancer caused by asbestos, due to her husband’s previous occupation at Construction Engineering.

Plaintiff couple Douglas L. and Jean L. conjointly filed this asbestos disease lawsuit, alleging the companies named in their claim failed to warn them against potential exposure. According to the asbestos disease lawsuit, Douglas had worked with products made of asbestos for years and was not given any protective measures to follow.

The asbestos disease lawsuit names Bell Helicopter Textron Inc. and several other aviation companies that had allegedly provided the asbestos materials used in Douglas’ job, which ultimately contributed to his mesothelioma diagnosis.

Douglas and Jean opted to file legal action against the companies after discovering they allegedly failed to take proper measures in warning users against potential asbestos exposure and its risks.

Overview of Asbestos Mesothelioma

Mesothelioma is one of the most significant forms of cancer caused by asbestos exposure; it has no cure and is often diagnosed at a latent stage of development. Mesothelioma is a rare form of cancer specifically caused by asbestos fibers becoming entrapped in the lining around organs, which causes scarring and cancer development.

The American Cancer Society records approximately 3,000 cases of mesothelioma diagnoses per year in the United States. The disease most likely to occur in people who have worked with asbestos or products made of asbestos. When asbestos fibers become airborne, people inadvertently inhale or swallow them and are put at risk for asbestos related health complications.

There are over 75 different occupations that regularly put workers through asbestos exposure, with industrial workers, power plant workers, firefighters, and United States Navy veterans being the among the highest risk. Other factors and causes that could increase the likelihood of mesothelioma includes potential second hand exposure, or past radiation therapy treatments in the chest area.

In terms of occupational asbestos exposure, United States Navy veterans are at a particularly high risk due to how often it was built into Navy ships during World War II.

Asbestos Use

Asbestos is a fibrous materials that is resistant against fire and chemical damages, which made it ideal for insulation. This means that is commonly implemented in other industries like automobiles and home construction.

During the 1980s and 1990s, the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) had taken measures to help reduce to the risk of asbestos exposure by minimizing concentration levels in work environments.  Asbestos is still found in older buildings in the United States, but it is heavily regulated and must include disclosures from manufacturing companies. It has also been recently noticed that asbestos was found in talc baby powder.

Douglas alleges the companies knew their products contained asbestos since at least 1930, but did not warn him against the risk of potential exposure. Douglas and Jean are seeking compensation for shortened life expectancy, negligence, and other relevant damages.
