Jardiance flesh eating bacteriaNews about SGLT-2 inhibitors and the possibility of a serious infection has the medical community concerned, including doctors who have prescribed medications that might lead to Jardiance flesh eating bacteria.

The development of such an infection can track quickly, leading to hospitalization of the patient. Patients taking the drug after getting a prescription from a doctor will be aware of some side effects, but the severity of these infections and reports from consumers indicate that users might not know about the flesh-eating infection dangers.

Patients might not realize that they were at risk for Jardiance flesh eating bacteria until they had been diagnosed with a life threatening serious infection of the genitals, also known as Fournier’s gangrene.

Fournier’s gangrene has been associated with a class of diabetes medications known as SGLT-2 inhibitors. In certain cases, taking these medications as prescribed, whether Jardiance, Invokamet, or another, can lead to a serious and even life threatening genital infection.

Although it is not yet known how many people might be affected by Jardiance flesh eating bacteria, those patients already taking these medications should report their concerns to a physician immediately.

Fournier’s Gangrene Risk

The Food and Drug Administration has already issued a warning about this dangerous flesh eating bacteria condition that can occur with SGLT-2 inhibitors. This condition might be referred to as Fournier’s gangrene or necrotizing fasciitis.

Infection with this bacteria could cause the patient to become hospitalized. Many patients who are taking Jardiance or other SGLT-2 medications say they were not told about the risks in advance or warned about the symptoms that could indicate the development of Fournier’s gangrene.

SGLT-2 inhibitors work by decreasing blood sugar for patients with type-2 diabetes by encouraging the kidneys to increase more sugar through the patient’s urine. This can reduce the risk of diabetic problems such as stroke or heart attack. However, more sugar in the urine could lead to an environment that is welcoming to Jardiance flesh eating bacteria.

This is why infections such yeast and urinary tract infections are so common for patients taking these diabetes drugs. The bacteria can enter through some type of break in the skin. The development of Jardiance flesh eating bacteria, however, is a medical emergency because the infection can spread elsewhere in the body and cause troubling side effects.

After the condition of Fournier’s gangrene is suspected, physicians will need to start a course of antibiotics with the patient as soon as possible and remove any dead tissue through surgery to try to inhibit the bacteria from spreading.

While this condition is extremely rare and typically occurs in 1.6 out of every 100,000 males each year in the United States, the FDA says the situation can be much more likely for those taking SGLT-2 inhibitors. During a five-year period, the FDA says it received reports of at least 12 cases of Fournier’s gangrene linked to a variety of different medications, including Jardiance flesh eating bacteria.
