PerFix mesh plug causes painC.R. Bard is facing a new hernia mesh lawsuit, alleging the companyโ€™s PerFix mesh plug had caused the claimant serious injuries. The hernia mesh lawsuit was filed by a woman from Missouri, who alleges the company failed to warn her against the defective nature of the PerFix mesh plug.

Plaintiff Dorothy M. says she had two PerFix Mesh plugproducts implanted on April 7, 2011, for typical hernia repair, and allegedly suffered serious device complications soon after. She says she had to undergo revision surgery.

The PerFix mesh plug is a three dimensional polypropylene mesh product that was developed for hernia repair, with the polypropylene material meant to spur growth in the surrounding tissue.

This growth is supposed to encourage healing, and meant to help patients get back to a normal life more quickly. This has allegedly not been the case for many patients, however, with many of them reportedly injured and forced to undergo revision surgery.

This was allegedly the case for Dorothy, who had to undergo reparative surgery on Aug. 28, 2017. According to her hernia mesh lawsuit, like other hernia mesh lawsuits, Dorothy had developed infections, an intestinal blockage, hernia recurrence, and severe discomfort from her hernia mesh.

With serious complications, including the surgeons noting that the PerFix mesh plug โ€œwas protruding through the abdominal wall,โ€ Dorothy says she underwent revision surgery. The PerFix mesh plug was removed and was replaced with a different product, but Dorothy says she still continues to suffer from the effects of hernia mesh pain.

Overview of PerFix Mesh Plug Complications

The PerFix mesh plug is designed to contract or bunch up inside the patient, which impacts tissue ingrowth and the bodyโ€™s inflammatory response. This essentially means that the mesh material is supposed to spur inflammation to encourage healing, and is supposed to dissipate as the hernia gets better.

However, the potential for infection develops if the inflammation does not go down and often indicates an adverse biological response. Hernia mesh infection often causes patients to develop fever and other flu-like symptoms, and can even cause some patients to develop dental problems.

If hernia mesh infection progresses, highly resistant and organized bacterial colonies called biofilms form. Biofilms are resistant to antibiotics and can only be treated if the infected muscle and damaging product is removed. Signs and symptoms of hernia mesh failure include, but are not limited to:

    • Pain
    • Swelling
    • Adhesions
    • Obstructions
    • Mesh Migration
    • Bacterial Infections
    • Hernia Recurrence

Early signs of hernia mesh infection are the incision site not healing properly, which can include heat emission from red or yellowish skin.ย Patients who believe they are experiencing hernia mesh failure should contact their physician immediately, to prevent the condition from getting worse.

The PerFix mesh plug is not the only mesh by C.R.Bard and Davol to cause complications. Theย Composix Kugel Mesh and Ventralex also led patients to hernia mesh revision surgery.

At all times relevant, Dorothy says she and her physician had relied on the marketing statements and product information provided by Bard. Dorothy states that she would not have agreed to have the PerFix mesh plug implanted, if she had known about the defective nature of this product.

This Hernia Mesh Lawsuit is Case No. 2:18-cv-01300-EAS-KAJ, in the U.S. District Court of Southern Ohio, Eastern Division.
