Reports of Connection Between Neocate and RicketsReports indicate that there could be a connection between Neocate and rickets that could cause bone problems for infants taking this nutritional formula.

Neocate formula is marketed as safe for infants who are unable to take other types of baby formula, but recent studies and complaints indicate that there is a link between Neocate and rickets that parents might not be aware of until their child has begun to exhibit unexplained symptoms of bone problems.

Babies consuming Neocate infant formula reportedly have an increased risk of suffering fractures and bone problems. Many young children and infants who could be allergic to regular cow milk and also have an allergy to soy may require alternative formulas.  One of the most commonly-purchased types of alternative formulas is marketed under the Neocate brand. Neocate is one of the leading brands for use with children who have allergies to other types of formula.

The Neocate formula is soy oil and dairy free and is based on amino acid formulas designed to minimize allergic reactions. However, the scientific journal Bone recently published concerns that Neocate and rickets were linked together. The studies have shown that Neocate and rickets are connected and that those children consuming this formula have a higher chance of bone fractures.

At least 51 children in 17 different institutions were reportedly suffering from bone related problems and abnormally low levels of phosphate in the blood. Many of these infants had received only Neocate products. The doctors identified this condition when working with those children to treat rickets and fractures.

Rickets is caused by a vitamin D deficiency that leads to deformed and soft bones. In 94 percent of the cases involving Neocate and rickets, the children had under-mineralization and fractures. When the children were moved to another formula product or provided additional phosphate, their conditions improved.

When a parent uses any formula, including Neocate, they expect that the product is safe for ongoing use with a baby. Particularly for those children who are sensitive to other types of formula, many parents have put their trust in Neocate for a healthy and effective form of nutrition.

So far, there has been one reported case of a parent who faced suspicion of child abuse as a result of fractures that seemingly developed for no reason. The parent realized, after seeing an advertisement indicating that Neocate and rickets were connected, that the formula could have been the cause of the unexplained fractures.

Parents who are currently concerned about the link between Neocate and rickets should monitor their children for nutritional deficiencies that could develop into bone problems. Those children who are taking this allegedly nutritional formula could be developing significant bone problems and issues without parents’ knowledge.

Some parents have already come forward to report their concerns over the lack of proper warnings connected to Neocate and rickets and claim that the manufacturer should be held accountable for the injuries sustained by the children.
