Saxagliptin Heart Failure Lawsuit Says Patient Not Warned of DangersPlaintiff Sonia N. has lodged a saxagliptin heart failure lawsuit against drug makers AstraZeneca and Bristol-Myers Squibb, alleging that she was not properly warned about the dangers of their diabetes medication.

She alleges that the use of the diabetes drug saxagliptin, also known by the brand name Onglyza, can allegedly lead to cardiac failure, congestive heart failure, and other severe health conditions.

The saxagliptin heart failure lawsuit says that Bristol Meyers did not warn her about the risk that using the drug could cause her to suffer critical injuries.

As explained in the saxagliptin heart failure lawsuit, medications like Kombiglyze and Onglyza are prescribed in order to lower blood sugar levels for those patients diagnosed with diabetes.

In July 2009, the makers of the drug began marketing Onglyza. A little over one year later, they manufacturers began the marketing process for Kombiglyze XR. The saxagliptin heart failure lawsuit says that at no time did the makers of the drug appropriately warn patients and doctors about the risk of adverse cardiovascular events.

According to the saxagliptin heart failure lawsuit, the drug maker was told to complete a cardiovascular outcome trial in 2008. A few years after the drugs were on the market, these trials were completed.

After the FDA reviewed the data used for that trial, the agency determined that a warning had to be added to the box for these medications as a result of the high risk of heart failure revealed in the trials.

The saxagliptin heart failure lawsuit says that the defendants did not do enough to warn patients and doctors about the risks of these medications. Further, the benefits do not outweigh the risks of taking the drugs, says the plaintiff.

The saxagliptin heart failure lawsuit argues that the makers of the drug under-warned and over-promoted the drugs — putting patients at risk.

The plaintiff in the saxagliptin heart failure lawsuit says that the drug caused her severe pain and suffering in addition to inconvenience, embarrassment, loss of earnings, mental anguish, mental and bodily injuries, and past and future medical expenses.

The lawsuit argues that the makers of the drugs knew about the significant risks of the drug when it was put on the market, but took efforts to conceal these risks from potential patients in order to reap more profit.

The plaintiff says that she suffered cardiovascular events and congestive heart failure directly related to the use of the medication. The lawsuit claims that the company went out of their way to conceal dangers of the medication at the expense of patients like her who suffered life-threatening health events impacting the heart.

Defective medication lawsuits target companies that may have failed to warn the medical community and potential patients about the risks of using certain drugs as prescribed.

The Saxagliptin Heart Failure Lawsuit is Case No. 1:18-cv-09406-DAB, filed in the U.S. District Court Southern District of New York.
