The city of Hartford, Conn. has agreed to pay $2.75 million to residents forced out of their homes from 2010 until 2015 as a part of a relocation class action settlement.

The Hartford, Conn. relocation class action settlement puts an end to claims that Hartford code enforcement officials failed to provide temporary housing or assistance to residents forced from condemned buildings.

According to the plaintiffs, relocated residents were entitled to temporary housing and/or assistance when they were relocated under Connecticut law.

“Some were just living in terrible conditions; some were displaced by fires,” one of the attorneys representing the class told the Hartford Courant. “But the underlying factor, the universal factor, was that all of them were living in buildings with serious problems, and those problems were not their fault.”

According to the Hartford relocation class action settlement, Class Members include Hartford, Conn. residents displaced due to condemnation of their building, whether from fire or for code violations from Jan. 1, 2010 until Sept. 30, 2015 without proper accommodation.

Though a judge ordered the city of Hartford to pay $6.25 million, the city appealed the order, leading to the Hartford, Conn. relocation class action settlement.

Under the terms of the Hartford, Conn. relocation class action settlement, the city will pay a total of $3.1 million to exit the lawsuit. The city will pay the approximately 1,690 Class Members an estimated $4,500 each.

The Hartford, Conn. relocation class action settlement was reached in March 2018.
