Were you informed about Invokana side effects before taking the medication, including the possibility of lower extremity amputation? Some patients claim that by the time they became aware of this issue, it was too late as they have already undergone surgery.
Patients who took the diabetes medication have come forward to complain of Invokana side effects. One of the more severe Invokana side effect reported in recent years is lower extremity amputation. Some patients who have chosen to file lawsuits against the manufacturers of Invokana allege that they were never told about lower extremity amputation or other severe Invokana side effects.
Many of these patients say that they were not able to make an informed decision about using this particular medication due to the lack of information about Invokana side effects.
The risk of lower extremity amputation can come as a shock to a patient who has been taking this medication as ordered by their doctor but suddenly requires immediate amputation surgery. Recent warnings from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration indicate that Invokana side effects can include lower extremity amputation in addition to concerns related to diabetic ketoacidosis.
These risks have been linked to Invokamet XR, Invokamet, and Invokana. Studies indicate that patients taking these diabetes medications may face twice as high the risk of undergoing a lower limb amputation when compared with patients taking a placebo.
Invokana and Lower Extremity Amputation
The most common type of amputations connected to these diabetes drugs were those including the middle of the foot and the toe. However, diabetic amputations involving the leg below and above the knee have also been reported.
A 2017 safety announcement released by the FDA indicated that new warnings would be added to the medication as a result of the severity of this risk. Some patients who have already undergone amputations and suffered other side effects have come forward to file lawsuits, claiming that the company purposely failed to disclose this information so that patients could make an educated decision about whether the benefits of this drug outweigh the risks.
Severe Invokana side effects can catch a patient off guard. According to patient lawsuits, the typical educational information provided to patients and doctors would not have allowed either of those parties to fully understand the risks and possible downsides of using the medication. Indeed, plenty of patients who have chosen to take legal action say no one gave them a warning about the heightened risk of amputation prior to using Invokana.
If you or someone you know has already taken Invokana or similar diabetes medications and has had to undergo an amputation as a result of your prescribed usage of the drug, you could be eligible to participate in a class action lawsuit investigation and file a lawsuit against the manufacturer.
In general, Invokana and Invokamet lawsuits are filed individually by each plaintiff and are not class actions.
