Essure nickel sensitivity leads to cramps and side effectsA group of Australian women have joined a class action lawsuit alleging they suffered from Essure nickel sensitivity and Essure complications after they were implanted with the Essure contraceptive device.

Essure, a permanent, non-surgical form of contraception, has been in the news quite a bit lately due to its controversial nature. Many countries have outlawed its use, but women around the world continue to choose Essure as their form of contraception. Even more women still have an Essure device implanted in them to prevent conception.

Essure is manufactured by Bayer HealthCare and has been marketed to women as the only non-surgical form of permanent birth control available. Its composition of metal containing nickel, however, has allegedly caused Essure nickel sensitivity.

The way that Essure works is that flexible, metal coils are inserted into each fallopian tube. Over a three month period, these coils create an inflammatory response as well as scar tissue. The scar tissue keeps the sperm and the egg from meeting, thereby preventing conception. A doctor then checks to see if the fallopian tube is blocked and confirms that the patient is no longer able to conceive.

However, thousands of women all over the world have reported major problems including Essure nickel sensitivity, organ perforation, bloating, rashes, allergic reactions, excessive bleeding, pelvic pain, pain with intercourse, miscarriage and ectopic pregnancy.

Essure Lawsuit

The Guardian
reports that a new class action lawsuit has been filed by Australian women regarding severe complications such as Essure nickel sensitivity,  “unintended pregnancy, chronic pain, perforation and migration of the device, allergic reactions and immune-type reactions after being implanted with the device.”

Some report that the device corrodes, exposing women with Essure nickel sensitivity to nickel poisoning. For some women, The Guardian reports, an entire hysterectomy is necessary in order to keep Essure nickel sensitivity at bay or to combat other serious Essure side effects.

An Australian law agency that is representing the women announced recently that it would lead a class action against the drug manufacturer, Bayer. These plaintiffs are women who have experienced Essure nickel sensitivity and other serious complications.

One of the attorneys told The Guardian, “Essure was hailed as the new wave of contraceptive devices. Unlike traditional permanent contraceptive surgery, Essure was marketed as being fast, effective and minimally invasive, it could be inserted in your doctor’s office. However, for the women who have experienced complications, it has been incredibly damaging.”

One woman, Tanya D., had the Essure device inserted eight years ago in 2010. She alleges she experienced severe problems and wondered if she was losing cognitive function.

She told The Guardian, “Every day I wake to the feeling of brain fog, have trouble remembering simple things like the names of every day objects or get lost mid-sentence. I was terrified I was experiencing the onset of early Alzheimer’s disease.”

She claims that she experienced severe menstrual bleeding, hair loss, chronic fatigue, gastric issues, sharp ovarian pain and loss of cognitive function.

In February 2016, she was diagnosed with Essure nickel sensitivity and was forced to have the device removed. Unfortunately, the device broke during surgery and she underwent a hysterectomy.

If you believe you have suffered from Essure nickel sensitivity or other severe problems caused by the Essure birth control device, you may benefit from speaking to an experienced attorney.

In general, Essure lawsuits are filed individually by each plaintiff and are not class actions.
