Kidney Cancer and Need for Donors Among New Trends in Diagnosed 9/11 Health ProblemsMany 9/11 health problems continue to haunt first responders and those who lived and worked near the tragedy back in 2001.

More than $7 billion is available in the 9/11 Victim Compensation Fund that was created to assist anyone diagnosed with cancer or another related illness after they were near Ground Zero between Sept. 11, 2001 and May 31, 2002.

If you suffer 9/11 health problems because you were present at the Pentagon attack or at the Shanksville crash site, you may be eligible to apply for a portion of the Fund.

Newly Diagnosed 9/11 Health Problems

Many survivors of the 9/11 attacks now need donated organs to stave off the effects of cancer and other diseases attacking their internal organs.

One New Yorker who worked at a municipal building several blocks from the Twin Towers said the people around him wanted everything to return to normal as soon as possible. According to ABC7, Robert P. said he returned to work only two weeks after the Twin Towers were reduced to rubble and toxic particles filled the surrounding air.

Robert said that in 2008, his doctor diagnosed him with multiple myeloma, which is a cancer that can damage bones, the immune system, kidneys and red blood cells.  In addition, Robert was diagnosed with an autoimmune disease that began impairing his kidneys.

Robert said his kidneys stopped functioning completely in 2016, and he is now on dialysis three times a week. At age 65, he is on a waiting list for a kidney transplant.

He’s not alone. Thomas A., an officer with the New York Police Department, is looking for a donor kidney, too. Thomas worked in Lower Manhattan and at the Staten Island landfill for many weeks to help with the post-tragedy cleanup.

Thomas found out he had kidney cancer in 2003. Even though he has undergone a kidney transplant, the donor kidney has begun to fail. He hopes to find a donor soon.

Health care professionals have identified kidney cancer as the newest common issue among the recognized 9/11 health problems.

New York’s local ABC7 talked with Dr. Michael Crane, who leads Mount Sinai’s World Trade Center health program. Dr. Crane said he has no doubt the current wave of kidney cancer cases is linked to exposure to toxins from 9/11.

In fact, more than 70 different types of cancer are related to exposure to toxic materials released on 9/11. Any person who was a first responder or lived or worked in the immediate surrounding area and was diagnosed with cancer four years or more after exposure (or one year or more for blood and bone cancers) could be eligible for a portion of the 9/11 Victim Compensation Fund.

The Fund generally covers people who have developed 9/11 health problems because they were present near Ground Zero, defined as Lower Manhattan below Canal Street.

Statistics show 3.1 million hours of labor cleaned up 1.8 million tons of debris at Ground Zero. Many of the workers who participated in the clean-up efforts are likely eligible, but so are workers such as Robert P., who returned to his office just a few doors down from the World Trade Center ruins.

If you or someone you love developed cancer or other 9/11 health problems, you could be eligible for a portion of the 9/11 Victim Compensation Fund.

Navigating the complex and burdensome paperwork and strict deadlines to participate in the 9/11 Victim Compensation Fund can be difficult. An experienced 9/11 Victim Fund attorney can help and ensure you get the maximum compensation available.

If you were present near Ground Zero, generally considered to be Lower Manhattan below Canal Street, between September 11, 2001 and May 31, 2002, and were diagnosed with cancer 4 years or more after exposure (or 1 year or more for blood and bone cancers), you may qualify for compensation.
