A class action lawsuit over Tesla’s autopilot function may be resolved after the high tech car maker agreed to pay $5.4 million to settle the allegations.
The Tesla autopilot class action settlement will end a lawsuit alleging the autopilot feature in the high end electric vehicles, specifically the Model S, is dangerously defective.
According to the class action lawsuit, consumers paid more for an “Enhanced Autopilot” feature that would become available through software updates. However, the updates were delayed, according to the lawsuit, leading to a dangerous situation for Tesla Model S owners.
Under the terms of the Tesla autopilot class action settlement, the car maker will pay between $20 and $280 to each Class Member. Class Members do not need to file a claim – they will receive an automatic payment after final approval of the settlement agreement.
Additionally, Tesla “reaffirms its commitment to release any Enhanced Autopilot features that as of the Effective Date are not already released in Tesla Hardware 2 Vehicles.”
The deadline for Class Members to object to or exclude themselves from the Tesla autopilot class action settlement is Sept. 6, 2018.
