If you or a loved one experienced any problems with Persona knee replacement, you may have a legal claim. If Zimmer is found liable for patient injury, you could receive compensation for the physical, emotional, or financial injury you incurred from the device.

Many consumers have reported that problems with Persona knee replacement system include a design defect that leads the device to not perform as it should, causes patients pain, and often requires revision surgery.

In March 2015, Zimmer voluntarily recalled a component of the Persona Knee Replacement — the Zimmer Persona Trabecular Metal Tibial Plate. Reportedly, a problem with the tibial plate’s design caused it to loosen from where it was positioned during surgery.

If you were fitted with a Persona Knee Implant that included the Persona Trabecular Metal Tibial Plate, your knee implant may be experiencing problems due to the defects of the device. Some patients experience knee problems after a surgery but do not know that it is related to their knee replacement, specifically related to problems with Persona Knee Replacement.

Symptoms of problems with Persona Knee Replacement caused by a defective Persona TM Tibial plate include:

  • knee tightness
  • knee instability
  • inflammation
  • persistent pain
  • loss of mobility

These symptoms are caused when the tibial plate migrates from the position where it is installed. In many knee replacement systems, a tibial plate is implanted in the tibia with cement. In the case of the Zimmer Persona TM Tibial Plate, the plate is implanted without cement and instead has two pegs that are inserted into the bone. These pegs are supposed to “grow” into the bone, giving stability to the implant and anchoring it in place.

However, patients have reported that the plate can migrate out of its original position. This movement can be detected in X-rays. When a plate begins to loosen, an X-ray will show “radiolucent lines” around the plate, coming from where the plate was originally situated.

In more severe cases of loosening, space can be seen between the bone and the plate when the knee is X-rayed. This gap is known as “poor seating.” Patients and their doctors reported a number of reasons for why a revision surgery is needed, including:

  • component failure
  • globally tight knee
  • fracture
  • instability
  • lack of ingrowth
  • loosening of device
  • loss of fixation
  • patella tracking issues
  • persistent pain

Many patients who have experienced these difficulties as a result of problems with Persona knee replacement have had to undergo revision surgery to replace the implant.

Revision surgeries are risky, even riskier than an initial surgery. Patients undergoing a revision knee replacement surgery have a higher risk of infection, failure of the implant, and other complications than patients undergoing an initial surgery. These revision surgeries also often cause patients to incur additional medical costs, missed work, time away from family, and emotional distress.
