the link between glyphosate and cancer is just becoming known to gardenersMonsanto Company is facing a new recently filed Roundup cancer lawsuit, from a man from Arkansas alleging there is a correlation between the weedkiller’s main ingredient glyphosate and cancer.

The man alleges the company either knew or should have known about the alleged correlation between glyphosate and cancer, but failed to warn the general public.

Plaintiff’ Michael A. states that there were no warnings or disclosures given about the alleged connection between glyphosate and cancer, and that he therefore had no reason to be wary of the possibility.

During all times relevant, Michael says he relied on the marketing statements and product information provided by Monsanto Company, which made no mention of the potentially carcinogenic nature of Roundup.

Roundup Lawsuit

According to the Roundup lawsuit, Michael had begun using the weedkiller in 1975 as part of his employment with his family farm. Michael had reportedly used Roundup on a regular basis for 35 years, and had used the weedkiller according to the product’s instructions and had followed all recommended precautions.

However, even with this diligence, Michael still developed long term health problems, and was diagnosed with non Hodgkin’s lymphoma in 2010. Michael has since been contending with the disease, and has incurred numerous medical expenses for his treatment.

Michael decided to file legal action against Monsanto Company, after discovering the alleged connection between glyphosate and cancer, in hopes of recouping some of his medical costs.

Overview of Glyphosate and Cancer Correlation

Glyphosate is the main ingredient in Roundup, and is a broad spectrum herbicide that kills weeds and grasses that are known to compete with commercial crops.

Approximately 250 million pounds of glyphosate are sprayed on crops, commercial nurseries, suburban lawns, parks, and golf courses. This means that millions of people across the United States use glyphosate in their own yards, without knowing about the purported danger of the glyphosate and cancer correlation.

The alleged association was announced in March 2015, when the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) had released a report that stated glyphosate and four other pesticides were linked to cancer. This report was released after three studies from the United States, Canada, and Sweden were published, which all indicated an increased risk of cancer:

    • Canada Study: Published in November 2001 in the journal Cancer, Epidemiology, Biomarkers & Prevention, research found that people exposed to glyphosate were at risk for developing non Hodgkin’s lymphoma in under 10 years after exposure.
    • United States Study: Published in Occupational and Environmental Medicine, researchers concluded that glyphosate and certain other pesticides were “potentially carcinogenic” and were “associated with increased NHL [non-Hodgkin’s Lymphoma] incidence.”
    • Sweden Study: Published in October 2008 in the International Journal of Cancer, which noted the risk of non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma doubled after less than 10 years of glyphosate exposure.

Even though the alleged correlation between glyphosate and cancer is well established, Monsanto Company is accused of failure to warn the general public. Monsanto Company was allegedly aware of the correlation for the last 40 years, with the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) suspecting a link in the 1980s.

Michael states he would not have used Roundup if he had known about the potential link between glyphosate and cancer.

This Roundup Lawsuit is Case No. 5:18-cv-00139-JM, in the U.S. District Court of Eastern Arkansas, Pine Bluff Division.
