A Texas resident has filed a new Mirena pseudotumor lawsuit against Bayer Healthcare, alleging that she has suffered from serious side effects from the use of a Mirena implant.

Plaintiff Kelsey H.’s Mirena pseudotumor lawsuit alleges that her injuries were directly caused by her implantation with a defective Mirena device. The Mirena pseudotumor lawsuit was filed on multiple counts, including negligence, design defect, failure to warn, strict liability, breach of express and implied warranties, and several others.

Plaintiff Issues with Mirena

According to Kelsey’s complaint, she was implanted with the Mirena device in 2006 as a form of permanent birth control. She kept the Mirena device without complication through May 2012, when she had it removed.

Kelsey chose to have another Mirena device implanted in July 2014, which also initially went without complication. However, after implantation with that second device, Kelsey says she began experiencing a number of side effects, including serious headaches, vision problems, blurry vision, and even loss of vision.

In September 2016, just over two years after she had the second device implanted, Kelsey says she ended up in the emergency room for migraines. After undergoing a CT scan, Kelsey was diagnosed with intracranial hypertension, also known as pseudotumor cerebri. She then had to undergo treatment to relieve the pressure in her brain.

Mirena Birth Control Device

The Mirena IUD is a popular form of permanent birth control, manufactured and distributed by Bayer Healthcare. The Mirena IUD was approved in 2009 by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA). Mirena is a small and flexible long-acting IUD that is implanted in the uterus. Over time, the Mirena device slowly releases a birth control hormone.

Unfortunately, implantation with the Mirena IUD has been linked an increased risk of developing intracranial hypertension (IH), also known as pseudotumor cerebri (PTC).

Pseudotumor cerebri, or IH, is not actually a tumor, though its symptoms resemble those of a tumor. Patients that suffer from pseudotumor cerebri symptoms like Mirena IUD headaches can experience pain and even permanent damage.

Essentially, pseudotumor cerebri is caused by the buildup of excess cerebrospinal fluid in the skull. As you might expect, this can cause serious problems. Excess cerebrospinal fluid can result in several pseudotumor cerebri Mirena symptoms, including extreme pressure inside the skull, causing Mirena IUD headaches and migraines. As the pressure builds, it may begin to affect a patient’s vision, causing partial vision loss or even total blindness. Treatment should be sought as soon as possible.

Symptoms of pseudotumor cerebri include headaches, migraines, dizziness, vision changes, nausea, and depression, among others.
