A Lord & Taylor data security breach was recently announced, with the clothing company stating that approximately five millions customers’ personal information has been compromised.
The Lord & Taylor data security breach reportedly stems back to May 2017, with the credit and debit card numbers of millions of consumers compromised by hackers. Customers of Saks Fifth Avenue and Saks OFF 5th were also reportedly affected by the data breach.
The Lord & Taylor data security breach has already spurred a class action investigation, with customers already filing legal action to seek compensation for their stolen debit or credit card information.
A class action lawsuit has already been filed in the wake of the Lord & Taylor data breach, from a woman alleging the company failed to warn her and other consumers of the breach in a timely manner.
News of the Lord & Taylor data security breach was announced on April 1, 2018, with the company stating it had become “aware of a data security issue involving customer payment card data.”
Consumers’ debit and credit card information was reportedly stolen by hackers and sold on the dark web, which ultimately puts these consumers at high risk for identity theft and credit card fraud.
Lead plaintiff Bernadette Beekman is filing this data breach class action lawsuit against Lord & Taylor, alleging the store failed to exercise adequate safety measures when protecting the personal financial information of consumers.
The personal information that was included in the compromised credit and debit card records includes the cardholder name, card number, expiration date, and internal verification code.
According to the claim, Beekman had used a credit card to pay for a purchase at a Lord & Taylor retail location in New York City in May 2017. During this transaction, Beekman’s private information had been exposed. Beekman claims the exposure was due to the company’s insufficient security system.
After learning of the Lord & Taylor data security breach, Beekman has been forced to heavily monitor or credit card statements for any fraudulent activity.
Overview of Lord & Taylor Data Security Breach
The Lord & Taylor data security breach was reportedly conducted by the criminal syndicate known as “JokerStash”, which announced on March 28, 2018 that over five million stolen debit and credit card records would be sold on the dark web.
The cybersecurity firm Gemini Advisory had confirmed that debit and credit card records from consumers who made purchases between May 2017 and late March 2018, were at risk for being sold on the dark web. The Lord & Taylor data security breach allegedly occurred due to insufficient security measures practiced by the company.
“The data breach was a direct and proximate result of [Saks’] failure to properly safeguard and protect [consumers’ personal information] from unauthorized access, use, and disclosure, as required by various state and federal regulations, industry practices, and the common law,” the data breach class action lawsuit states.
Beekman is filing this data breach class action lawsuit on behalf of herself and other class members, alleging Lord & Taylor allegedly failed to comply with security standards regarding payment systems.
This Lord & Taylor Data Security Breach Class Action Lawsuit is Bernadette Beekman v. Lord & Taylor LLC, Case No. 1:18-cv-00521-UNA, in the U.S. District Court of Delaware.
