submarineA former submarine worker claims that asbestos exposure on the job led him to develop lung disease.

Plaintiff Arnold G. claims he worked for General Dynamics and Electric Boat Corp. in Groton, Conn., a company that was a primary builder of submarines for the U.S. Navy. He states that the worked for the company in Connecticut from about 1966 to the present as a cleaner and painter on board submarines under construction or needing repair. He now claims that asbestos exposure on the job over his more than 30 year career led him to develop lung disease.

Arnold alleges that the asbestos that caused his lung disease was part of products created by CBS Corporation, Crane Co. and Foster Wheeler LLC. He claims that the companies knew that asbestos was dangerous to humans, yet knowingly produced and sold materials containing asbestos, endangering individuals.

Asbestos Use

Research dating back as early as the 1920s has linked asbestos to lung disease. However,  despite research alerting manufacturers to the health risks of asbestos, many manufacturers continued to use it in products and release it into the market.

In recent years, asbestos use in commercial goods and materials has been severely limited or banned because of its negative impact on human health. But many individuals still face heath problems related to previous asbestos exposure, as a result of companies’ extended use of the material and the lag time before symptoms arise.

Additionally, many individuals who claim they were subjected to asbestos exposure on the job have claimed that manufacturers actively chose to use asbestos in various products though they knew it was harmful to humans. Lawsuits against manufacturers using asbestos claim that many manufacturers intentionally concealed information about the negative health impacts of asbestos from customers purchasing materials containing asbestos as well as from those working with said materials.

According to Arnold, such was the case during his employment at General Dynamics. Allegedly, he was forced to work around and with asbestos-containing materials on a regular basis as part of his job, and that his exposure to such materials was considered a normal and necessary part of his employment.

He claims that CBS and others failed to publish or alert individuals of the research surrounding asbestos that had been produced since the 1920s. Moreover, no effort was made to alter Arnold’s work environment or tasks to limit or eliminate his exposure to asbestos.

Today, many individuals making legal claims allege that they developed lung diseases and conditions, particularly lung cancer, from their extended asbestos exposure on the job. Arnold joins them in claiming that he developed asbestos-related lung disease and suffered a loss of lung function as a result of his asbestos exposure on the job.

The CBS asbestos lawsuit claims that Arnold “has endured significant pain and mental anguish and will continue to suffer in the future.” He seeks damages for physical injury, pain and suffering, and financial injury caused by lost wages due to his condition, as well as medical bills incurred from his condition.

The CBS Asbestos Exposure On The Job Lawsuit is Case No. 3:18-cv-0328-SRU, in the U.S. District Court for the District of Connecticut.
