woman with cane, hip replacementHave you been implanted with a Stryker metal hip device? If you have been experiencing complications after implantation with a Stryker metal hip implant, this may be due to a defect with the Stryker V40 femoral head component.

Patients who have suffered from side effects of one of these hip replacement devices may be able to file a lawsuit and receive compensation for their injuries.

Stryker Metal Hip Implant Side Effects

Unfortunately, Stryker V40 femoral heads have been associated with a variety of serious complications, including metallosis, a kind of metal poisoning.

Metallosis problems are often linked with metal-on-metal hip implants. The Stryker metal implant is one such device, allowing the Stryker V40 femoral head to rub against other metal parts. Over time, this can release excessive amounts of metals like cobalt and chromium into the bloodstream and surrounding tissue, which can cause serious and even permanent problems.

On top of the risk of metallosis, Stryker V40 femoral heads have also been linked with an increased risk of dislocation or dissociation.

A growing number of patients like James who have allegedly been injured by these devices are coming forward to report their own stories of side effects due to the defective Stryker V40 femoral heads. Lawsuits claim that Stryker failed to adequately warn patients of the serious complications associated with defective Stryker V40 femoral heads.

Patients have reported a slew of complications linked with their metal implants, including:

  • Disassociation of device components
  • Fractured hip stem trunnion
  • Excessive metallic debris
  • Insufficient Range of Motion (ROM)
  • Insufficient soft tissue tension
  • Noise
  • Loss of implant: bone fixation strength
  • Excessive wear debris (polymeric)
  • Implant construct with a shortened neck length

Some patients who have suffered from side effects caused by a defective metal-on-metal hip implant, including those with the Stryker V40 femoral head component, may necessitate revision surgery to alleviate the problem. Of course, any additional surgery adds yet more risk and expense for a patient.

Recall of the Stryker V40 Femoral Head

In response to these reports of side effects, Stryker issued a voluntary recall of its LFIT Anatomic metal hip implant, which includes the defective Stryker V40 femoral head component. The FDA followed with its own recall notice.

This is not the first Stryker recall over a metal hip implant. Previously, both the Stryker Rejuvenate and ABG II Modular systems were recalled in 2012 over reports of device corrosion and metallosis.

Filing a Stryker V40 Femoral Head Lawsuit

If you or someone you love was implanted with a metal hip implant that includes a Stryker V40 femoral head and have since suffered from these or other side effects, you may be able to file a lawsuit. Spouses of those who have suffered from defective metal-on-metal hip implants may also be able to sue for what is known as loss of consortium, or the loss of intimacy with their spouse due to complications.

Although filing a lawsuit cannot undo the damage done by complications of a defective Stryker V40 femoral head component, it can help to alleviate the financial burden caused by medical expenses and lost wages.
