Roundup cancer Monsanto tractor spraying cropsMonsanto Company is facing a new product liability lawsuit from a North Carolina woman alleging serious Roundup health issues. The woman alleges she developed non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma in direct consequence of Roundup health issues, and that Monsanto failed to warn her and the general public against this possibility.

Plaintiff Bertha M. says she used the product on a regular basis, while being unaware of potentially fatal Roundup health issues. According to the Roundup health issues lawsuit, Bertha used the weedkiller for typical purposes and followed all instructions provided on the product’s label.

However, Bertha alleges she still experienced Roundup health issues, which were allegedly omitted from the warning label. As a direct result of regular exposure to Roundup, Bertha allegedly developed non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma and is currently contending with the disease.

Overview of Roundup Health Issues

Roundup is a popular weedkiller used throughout North America, with consumers ranging from professional crop farmers to typical homeowners looking to keep weeds out of their yard. The product was first introduced in the 1970s, with farms, nurseries and golf courses using Roundup as their weedkiller of choice.

The main ingredient of Roundup, glyphosate, is the man contributing factor to the product’s success. Glyphosate is a selective herbicide, which is engineered to target specific invasive plant life while not affecting crops.

However glyphosate has also been allegedly linked to Roundup health issues indicated in injury reports, including instances of:

  • Non-Hodgkin’s Lymphoma
  • Leukemia
  • Multiple myeloma
  • B-cell lymphoma
  • Bone cancer
  • Renal cell carcinoma (kidney cancer)
  • Skin tumors
  • Pancreatic islet cell tumors
  • Chromosomal damage
  • DNA damage
  • Other cancers

Researchers eventually noticed a correlation between farmers and increased risk of cancer, in conjunction with Roundup and other pesticides. The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) first suspected that glyphosate was a potential carcinogen in the 1980s, with future research eventually supporting this.

The International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) released a report in March 2015, which concluded glyphosate could cause cancer. The IARC report was published after several studies were published in the United States, Canada and Sweden, each of which indicated Roundup health issues included increased risk of non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma.

The Canadian study was published by the American Association for Cancer Research in November 2001, which found that men exposed to glyphosate had an increased risk of developing non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma in under ten years after exposure.

The Roundup study in the United States was published in the Occupational and Environmental Medicine Journal, which found that glyphosate was “potentially carcinogenic” and had an “increased NHL [non-Hodgkin’s Lymphoma] incidence.”

The Swedish study found similar results and was published in the International Journal of Cancer in October 2008, which found the risk of non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma doubled in less than ten years after exposure. Along with glyphosate, the IARC report also found four other pesticides were carcinogenic in nature.

Even though these Roundup health issues could be devastating to patients, Monsanto Company allegedly failed to warn the public. Bertha states she would not have used the product if she had been aware of the potential Roundup health issues and increased risk of non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma.

This Roundup Health Issues Lawsuit is Case No. 4:18-cv-00173-DDN in the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Missouri.
