knee painMany people who receive knee replacements are implanted with the very popular Zimmer Persona knee implant. However, there have been some serious problems associated with the Zimmer Persona knee implant that have prompted many patients to file lawsuits.

The Zimmer Persona Trabecular Metal (TM) tibial plate is a part of the Zimmer Persona knee implant. This plate is implanted into the tibia bone without the use of cement.

The Zimmer Persona knee implant TM plate is supposed to grow into the bone via two pegs that are inserted into the tibia. This is to give the implant stability without the use of cement, as with previous knee implant systems.

However, in February 2015, the company that manufactures the Zimmer Persona knee implant and trabecular metal tibial plate issued a voluntary recall of thousands of its knee implants. Zimmer warned that their Persona knee implants could bring about complications because of early loosening.

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) announced this Zimmer Persona knee implant voluntary recall. According to the FDA announcement, “Zimmer, Inc. is initiating a voluntary recall of Persona Trabecular Metal Tibial following an increase in complaints of radiolucent lines and loosening. All sizes and lots of the affected devices are being removed from distribution.”

The FDA goes on to say that “Urgent Medical Device Recall notices were issued to affected distributors, hospitals, and surgeons … via email.” Nearly 12,000 Zimmer devices were affected by the voluntary Zimmer Persona knee implant recall.

Problems with the Zimmer Persona Knee Implant

The tibial plate of the Zimmer Persona knee implant has been connected with a few serious issues: radiolucent lines and loosening.

Radiolucent lines occur when gaps appear between the bone and the Zimmer Persona knee implant. This can mean that the original knee implant was seated poorly. A Zimmer Persona knee implant that shows signs of poor seating may move from the place it was implanted.

Radiolucent lines show up on X-rays and can indicate future device failure. Many patients and doctors have reported radiolucent lines with Zimmer Persona knee implant devices.

Second, there have been many reports of device loosening. A joint replacement should last between ten and twenty years, but early loosening can be a sign of future device failure. Often, Zimmer Persona knee implant recipients report device loosening and early knee implant failure.

Zimmer Persona knee implant patients who experience early device loosening are also likely candidates for revision surgery. Revision surgery is costly and is often riskier than the original surgery to implant the device. It is often met with increased hospital stays and further complications that can accompany revision surgery.

Other reasons for revision surgery in Zimmer Persona knee implant patients include pain, loss of fixation, globally tight knee, instability, fracture, patella tracking issues and lack of ingrowth.

If you or someone you love has been implanted with the Zimmer Persona knee implant system, you may benefit from speaking with an experienced attorney. While monetary compensation may not be able to take away the pain and suffering from revision surgery or complications, it may help alleviate the burden of medical costs or lost wages.
