Owners of certain Chrysler vehicles from 2006 and 2007 may qualify for a free replacement clutch safety interlock device valued at $80, under terms of a recent class action settlement.

Plaintiff Rickey Royal filed this Stoneridge class action lawsuit in December 2014, to be joined later by co-plaintiffs Sandra Epperton and Greg Hulcy. Royal claimed defendant Stoneridge manufactured a defective clutch safety interlock device, or CSID, that put drivers and passengers at risk for accidents and injury.

A CSID is a control device used in vehicles with manual transmissions. When working properly, the CSID prevents the engine from starting unless the clutch pedal is pressed all the way down.

According to Royal, the CSIDs at issue have a return spring that may fatigue. Failure of the return spring may allow the engine to start even if the clutch pedal is not depressed, which could result in sudden and unintended movement of the vehicle as soon as the engine starts.

The allegedly defective CSIDs were installed in certain models of Chrysler vehicles from model years 2006 and 2007.

Stoneridge continues to deny the plaintiffs’ claims, saying its CSIDs are not defective and it does not have any obligation to indemnify the owners of affected vehicles.

As part of the class action settlement, Stoneridge has agreed to provide qualifying Class Members with a replacement CSID at no charge. Class counsel has also requested an award of their attorneys’ fees and incentive awards for the named plaintiffs in the amount of $5,000 each.

Class Members can object to the settlement or exclude themselves from it by filing a written request by Jan. 9, 2018.

Who’s Eligible

The settlement Class covers U.S. persons who currently own vehicles equipped with manual transmissions that use a CSID built between Feb. 24, 2005 and Jan. 1, 2007.

Some vehicles that would otherwise qualify are excluded because they are subject to a recall by Chrysler. See the settlement website for details.

Persons who are not sure if they qualify as Class Members are invited to contact the settlement administrator to confirm.

Potential Award

Free Replacement Part.

Qualifying Class Members who submit valid and timely claims can receive a replacement CSID valued at $80.

Proof of Purchase

The Claim Form asks Class Members to provide, among other information, the make and model of their vehicle, the Vehicle Identification Number, and the date code of their CSID.

For safety, the Claim Form instructs claimants to “turn off your vehicle, remove the keys, put the vehicle in first gear or reverse gear, and fully apply the parking brake before attempting to read the date code on your CSID. Follow all instructions in the class notice.” Instructions for reading the CSID date code are available on the settlement website.

The online Claim Form requires Class Members to submit the Reference Number that appears on their postcard notice.
