Depositphotos_159340620_m-2015Johnson & Johnson is facing a new Invokana ketoacidosis lawsuit from a Kansas couple alleging the type-2 diabetes medication caused serious injuries.

Plaintiffs Tonya K. and Daniel K. file the Invokana ketoacidosis lawsuit in New Jersey federal court. The couple allege that Tonya began taking Invokana on Sept. 11, 2015 through Nov. 8, 2015.

Tonya says that she was prescribed Invokana to treat her diabetes through doctor’s orders. She would take the diabetes drug Invokana once by mouth daily to control her blood sugar level, along with proper diet and exercise.

Less than one year later, Tonya says she was admitted to Mosaic Life Care at St. Joseph Medical Center in St. Joseph, Mo. on Nov. 22, 2015. It was there she was diagnosed with acute renal failure and diabetic ketoacidosis.

Tonya was later discharged from St. Joseph and was told to discontinue taking Invokana by her physician, according to the lawsuit.

Tonya says that due to her taking the diabetes drug Invokana, she endured pain and suffering, loss of enjoyment of life, emotional distress, economic loss, and expenses for medical care and treatment.

According to the Invokana ketoacidosis lawsuit, Tonya’s “injuries were preventable and resulted directly from defendants’ failure and refusal to conduct proper safety studies.”

Invokana Ketoacidosis Lawsuit Joins MDL

Tonya’s claim is filed as part of a large multidistrict litigation, or MDL, centered on allegations that Invokana causes serious injuries. Injuries blamed on Invokana include diabetic ketoacidosis (DKA), bone fractures, amputation, pancreatitis, and cardiovascular side effects.

Invokana lawsuits claim that Johnson & Johnson and the company’s subsidiary Janssen Pharmaceuticals failed to warn of these adverse effects and serious risks.

Some of allegations raised against J&J and Janssen include: (1) failing to conduct proper clinical studies to ensure Invokana’s safety and efficacy; (2) failure to warn of Invokana’s side effects; (3) misrepresenting the risks and benefits of taking Invokana; and of (4) refusing to disclose information to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) of Invokana side effects.

Diabetes Drug Invokana

Invokana (canagliflozin) is a type-2 diabetes medication that is a part of a class of drugs called sodium-glucose contransporter-2 (SGLT-2) inhibitors.

The diabetes drug Invokana is prescribed to help prevent kidney damage, blindness, nerve problems, and loss of limbs. However, according to an announcement made by the FDA in May 2017, there have been reports of unexpected risks associated with this type-2 diabetes drug.

According to the FDA, “[b]ased on new data from two large clinical trials, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has concluded that the type 2 diabetes medicine canagliflozin (Invokana, Invokamet, Invokamet XR) causes an increased risk of leg and foot amputations. We are requiring new warnings, including our most prominent Boxed Warning, to be added to the canagliflozin drug labels to describe this risk.”

The Invokana Ketoacidosis Lawsuit is Case No. 3:17-cv-11797-BRM-LHG, in the U.S. District Court for the District of New Jersey. The Invokana MDL is in re: Invokana (Canagliflozin) Products Liability Litigation, in the U.S. District Court for the District of New Jersey.

In general, Invokana and Invokamet lawsuits are filed individually by each plaintiff and are not class actions.
