Many owners of Jeep Wranglers have had to dole out hundreds of dollars to have their cars fixed, even while still under warranty. These owners, while told they need an engine flush, have found that a manufacturing defect has left a great deal of casting sand inside the heating and cooling system of their vehicle.
Allegedly, Jeep Wranglers from 2012 to 2017 were made with a defect that can cause serious problems with the engine and its parts. Many owners also claim that Fiat Chrysler, the owner of Jeep, has not been standing behind their warranties when it comes to this Jeep Wrangler casting sand defect.
New Wranglers come with a limited warranty that covers bumper-to-bumper problems for three years or 36,000 miles. A Powertrain Limited Warrany also covers the engine block for 100,000 miles or 5 years.
What is the Jeep Wrangler Casting Sand Defect?
Many parts of an engine are made through a process called sand casting. Sand casting is a process during which sand molds are made for metal parts of an engine and then molten metal is poured into the molds. When the metal cools, it hardens and the sand casting is broken away. This leaves the metal engine component without the sand cast mold.
Allegedly, for some engine parts of the 2012-2017 Jeep Wranglers, residual casting sand was left in the components. This has resulted in that casting sand passing through the engine of many of these vehicles, leaving a sludge residue in important parts of the Wrangler’s engine, including the heater core, the radiator and the oil cooling systems.
The Jeep Wrangler sand casting problem seems to affect the Pentastar V-6 3.6-liter engine. The engine blocks of the Pentastar are made through the die-cast method, but the cylinder heads are manufactured with the sand-casting method. The cylinder head sits at the top of the engine.
Jeep Wrangler Casting Sand Lawsuit
Two lead plaintiffs have already filed a Jeep Wrangler casting sand lawsuit against the vehicle manufacturers. The plaintiffs claim this Jeep Wrangler casting sand sludge settles in the radiators which blocks the heating and cooling system of the car.
The two plaintiffs propose that this lawsuit should have class action status, as many vehicles have been affected and Jeep does not seem to be honoring the warranties that were promised to them when they bought their vehicles. Each of the plaintiffs paid over $1,000 to repair their heating systems on their Jeep Wranglers because of problems that were allegedly caused by casting sand.
This Jeep Wrangler casting sand lawsuit asserts that the only way to fix the problem is to replace the engines to remove the residual casting sand and sludge.
This Jeep Wrangler Casting Sand Lawsuit is Malizia, et. al. v. FCA US LLC, Case No. 1:2017-cv-07039 in the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of New York.

I just found out about this Jeep Wrangler defect from my mechanic and would like to join this lawsuit as I have had numerous problems with my 2016 wrangler cylinder heads, thermostat, heater core, the radiator and the oil cooling system. It will lead to more costly repairs later, but as dealerships are known for, they will only replace what’s broken. I’ve already had the right cylinder head and gasket replaced by dealership, now having issues with the left. Was told to also have all 24 rocker arms and lifters replaced so there’s no future damage to the cam shaft. This coming from my friend who happens to be a mechanic at a well known and respected local shop and an expert in Jeeps.
