Prescription pillsPatients across the country are becoming increasingly aware of Pradaxa dangers, with uncontrollable internal bleeding being consistently reported. Even with the recent release of reversal agent Praxbind in 2015, Pradaxa dangers are still a concern for patients.

Currently, there is a Pradaxa internal bleeding class action lawsuit investigation researching different injury reports indicating Pradaxa dangers including:

  • Internal bleeding
  • Kidney bleeding
  • Gastrointestinal bleeding
  • Heart attack
  • Stroke
  • Brain hemorrhage
  • Death

Pradaxa was approved by the FDA in 2010 and was the first medication to be approved for anticoagulant treatment purposes since warfarin in the 1950s. Pradaxa quickly overtook warfarin in popularity for its single dose prescription feature. Warfarin patients, in contrast, have to undergo frequent doctor appointments for dose adjustments.

However, Pradaxa lacked a confirmed reversal agent in case of extreme bleeding, which allegedly put patients at risk for Pradaxa dangers. Warfarin had a reversal agent, with patients implementing vitamin K in the case of internal bleeding.

Pradaxa is in the direct thrombin inhibitor drug class, and is often prescribed to treat atrial fibrillation and to prevent stroke in high risk patients.

Like other blood thinners, Pradaxa works by inhibiting the body’s clotting mechanism to prevent internal blood clots from forming. However, this also prevents the body from recovering from simple internal bleeding injuries, which can quickly become fatal.

Overview of Pradaxa Dangers

Pradaxa’s anticoagulant treatment mechanism bears directly on the alleged Pradaxa dangers reported by patients. These injury reports have been submitted to the FDA since shortly after Pradaxa’s approval. The FDA says it received 307 injury reports of Pradaxa dangers within the first three months of the drug entering the market.

Within the first full year of being on the market, there were 260 deaths allegedly linked to Pradaxa internal bleeding, gastrointestinal bleeding, hemorrhage, and stroke.

In December 2011, the FDA issued a public safety warning regarding Pradaxa dangers and warned patients to be wary against any signs or symptoms of internal bleeding including:

  • Unusual Bruising
  • Frequent Nose Bleeds
  • Bleeding from Gums
  • Unusual Color Urine
  • Red or Black Stools
  • Coughing up Blood
  • Vomiting Blood

Patients suffering from Pradaxa bleeding should seek emergency treatment as soon as possible, as they may need to be given Praxbind. Patients also may have to undergo dialysis to be completely sure that the drug is expelled from their system. This process can take hours, with patients often needing multiple blood transfusions to prevent death.

Plaitniffs in numerous individual Pradaxa lawsuits allege Boehringer Ingelheim knew about the potential Pradaxa dangers for years but failed to take proper action. The pharmaceutical giant allegedly failed to warn doctors and patients of the risk for uncontrollable internal bleeding, exposing numerous patients to Pradaxa dangers. In addition, Boehringer Ingelheim is facing numerous claims regarding negligence and failure to warn.

At this time, Boehringer Ingelehim has already settled claims from thousands of patients who allegedly suffered internal bleeding.

In general, Pradaxa lawsuits are filed individually by each plaintiff and are not class actions.
