The Method cleaning products settlement resolves a class action lawsuit filed in September 2016 by plaintiff Wesley Vincent, who alleges defendants People Against Dirty PBC & Method Products PBC deceptively marketed, labeled and advertised certain Method and Ecover products as “natural” or “naturally derived” when they actually contain artificial and synthetic ingredients.
Vincent challenged the defendants’ use of the terms “Natural,” “Naturally Derived,” “hypo-allergenic,” “non-toxic,” “plant-derived,” “plant-based,” “mineral-based,” “bio-based,” and similar statements to describe Method and Ecover branded personal care products, dishwashing products, laundry products and other household products.
According to the Ecover class action lawsuit, these products actually contain artificial and synthetic ingredients, some of which are allegedly hazardous and/or have the potential to cause irritation or an allergic reaction.
The defendants deny any wrongdoing but agreed to pay $2.8 million to settle the natural cleaning products class action lawsuit to avoid the burden and expense of ongoing litigation. The Ecover/Method natural products settlement received final approval on June 20, 2017. An appeal was filed the following month, but a judge dismissed the appeal on Aug. 29, 2017.
Class Members of the Ecover natural products settlement include all persons and entities who purchased any of the covered Method and Ecover products in the United States for personal use and not for resale between Aug. 1, 2010 and April 27, 2017.
Under the terms of the Method natural products settlement, Class Members were entitled to claim approximately $1 per unit purchased. Class Members without proof of purchase could claim up to eight units and Class Members with proof of purchase could submit claims for all covered products they purchased.
The deadline to file a claim for the Method/Ecover cleaning products class action settlement passed on April 27, 2017.
