DePuy ASR hip implant hip replacement settlementPatients who had the DePuy ASR hip implant surgically placed may have had complications arising from the medical device. The large number of complications reported by patients led to the eventual recall of the DePuy ASR hip replacement device in August 2010.

As a result, a DePuy ASR hip settlement has been established and eligible patients may be able to collect ASR hip settlement payments as a result of their injuries.

DePuy ASR Metal Hip Implant Complications

Because of its metal-on-metal design, the DePuy ASR metal hip plant has caused a number of complications to patients.

While many hip implants are made of metal due to its sturdy nature, most hip implants do not have a metal-on-metal design where the metal parts touch. Instead, other hip implant models have a ceramic or plastic liner that separates the metal components, prohibiting them from touching each other.

In the DePuy ASR metal hip implant, however, when the metal parts touch, the friction causes metal particles to flake off, and these enter the surrounding tissue and blood stream where they can cause a number of local and systemic issues.

When the metal ions enter the nearby tissue, it can cause necrosis, or tissue death. When the surrounding tissue of the implant dies, it can cause the device to loosen or fail and can cause fractures in surrounding bones. The metal ions can also cause a great deal of pain and inflammation due to the foreign substance entering the body.

When metal enters the bloodstream in high amounts, it can cause metal poisoning which can result in organ damage and systemic effects. Cardiomyopathy, degenerative heart disease, cobalt and chromium poisoning, endocrine disruption and more can develop after metal poisoning from the hip implant occurs.

Additionally, pseudotumors and noncancerous tumors may develop in addition to cancerous tumors. Some of these conditions caused by the metal hip implant can be reversed with the hip revision surgery, but many of them may have lasting effects that are not improved once the defective hip implant is removed and a new one is implanted in its place.
