The $63 million LCD flat-screen price-fixing class action settlement will resolve an antitrust lawsuit filed in 2010 by the Washington State Attorney General against several manufacturers of LCD flat-panel screens who were allegedly involved in a price-fixing conspiracy that caused consumers to pay inflated prices for certain monitors, televisions, notebook computers, color-screen cell phones and color-screen iPods.
The defendants did not admit to the allegations in the LCD flat-panel screen class action lawsuit, but agreed to settle the case to avoid the burden and expense of ongoing litigation.
The settling defendants include the following manufacturers and/or suppliers of LCD flat panel screens: AU Optronics, Chimei, Chunghwa, Epson, Hitachi, LG, Samsung, Sharp and Toshiba.
According to the antitrust class action settlement documents, AU Optronics agreed to pay $12.5 million, Chimei agreed to pay $8.75 million, Chunghwa agreed to pay $428,235, Epson agreed to pay $2.7 million, Hitachi agreed to pay $5.2 million, LG agreed to pay $13 million, Samsung agreed to pay $12.94 million, Sharp agreed to pay $6.75 million and Toshiba agreed to pay $950,000.
Class Members of the LCD antitrust settlement include Washington individuals and businesses who, between Jan. 1, 1998 and Dec. 1, 2006, purchased a television, monitor, notebook computer, color-screen cell phone or color-screen iPod that contained a flat-panel screen. To be eligible for payment, the LCD flat panel product must have been purchased from a retailer for personal use and not for resale.
The estimated payments varied by the type of LCD flat screen product purchased. It was estimated that Class Members could receive up to $108 per LCD television, $70 per flat-screen monitor, $75 per notebook computer, and $6 per color-screen cell phone and color-screen iPod.
The deadline to submit a claim for the Washington LCD flat-panel screen settlement passed on Sept. 30, 2016.
