takata-airbag-recallGeneral Motors (GM) has recently issued a Cadillac airbag recall after receiving numerous injury reports from consumers. The automotive company has been recently receiving harsh public criticism for multiple issues with their vehicles ranging from their airbags to faulty ignition switches.

The Cadillac airbag recall is a part of a recent initiative the company is taking, along with other vehicles affected by the Takata made airbags. The Cadillac airbag recall primarily affects newer model cars, with the company warning consumers their airbags could potentially explode with the highest risk in the following Cadillac models:

  • 2010-2014 Escalade
  • 2010-2014 Escalade ESV
  • 2010-2013 Escalade EXT

According to the Cadillac airbag recall, the frontal airbags can suddenly explode and potentially harm driver and front passenger. These airbag explosions have reportedly already resulted in several deaths, along with other serious injuries to GM consumers.

Overview of Airbag Recall

The airbag explosions have been linked to issues with the airbag’s inflation component, which consists of a metal cartridge filled with propellant. The propellant used in the airbags is made from ammonium nitrate, which is also a chemical often used for making bombs.

Many automakers, like GM in the Cadillac airbag recall, have utilized Takata’s airbags, as they are supposed to deploy just enough to make the airbags inflate. As an airbag inflation, this component is designed to inflate when activated in the case of collision or impact.

The allegedly defective nature of these airbags, however, cause them to inflate and explode rapidly, sending metal shrapnel throughout the vehicle. The defective airbags essentially become unpredictable explosives, rather than airbags. This is because the allegedly defective airbags reportedly do not have sufficient amount of the necessary drying agent that limits the amount of force the airbags use to deploy.

In addition to the inadequate drying agent amount, explosive airbags have also been reportedly linked to high heat and humidity. Experts tie this issue to the propellant deteriorating.

These Takata airbags are currently used by 19 different automobile companies, each of which had to conduct a recall due to the alleged defective front airbags on either the driver’s or passenger’s side. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has described this recall as “the largest and most complex safety recall in U.S. history.”

Takata airbags have been the most often installed in cars, in use from as early as 2002 and as late as 2015. At this time, there have been at 11 reported deaths and at least 180 injuries in alleged result of the defective airbags.

The Takata airbag recall has significantly increased in size for over the past year, with experts predicting that it will effect over 42 million vehicles in the United States and between 65 and 70 million airbags. Even though Takata airbags have taken major criticism for these defective airbags, automakers have also taken the brunt of it as well.

Many automobile owners have asked these companies why the recalls did not happen sooner, or at least provide accommodations after their vehicles were recalled. In addition to not promptly warning consumers, the automobile companies allegedly did not have adequate amounts of parts necessary for the repairs.

Consumers affected by the Cadillac airbag recall or other vehicle models may be eligible for legal action and should contact a lawyer.
