A California woman with diabetes recently filed a Farxiga side effects lawsuit against the drug’s manufacturers.
The plaintiff, Jeannette C., chose to file a Farxiga side effects lawsuit after allegedly suffering from diabetic ketoacidosis due to the use of Farxiga to treat her type-2 diabetes.
Jeannette says she began taking Farxiga at the direction of her doctor to treat her type-2 diabetes in February 2014. However, around four months later, Jeannette suffered from diabetic ketoacidosis and acute renal failure, and was subsequently admitted to the hospital for over a week. She was immediately told to discontinue her treatment with Farxiga. The Farxiga side effects lawsuit claims that these side effects were a direct result of treatment with Farxiga.
The Farxiga side effects lawsuit alleges that the manufacturers of Farxiga were aware of the risk of diabetic ketoacidosis that their drug posed for patients, yet failed to warn patients and the medical community, placing them at significant risk.
The Farxiga diabetic ketoacidosis lawsuit was filed on multiple counts, including failure to warn, defective design, negligence, breach of express and implied warranties, fraud, and several others, as well as violations of California law. Jeannette’s lawsuit is part of an MDL, or multidistrict litigation, comprised of several similar lawsuits.
Background of Farxiga
Farxiga (also known by its generic name, dapagliflozin) is a new kind of type-2 diabetes medication collaboratively manufactured by AstraZeneca Pharmaceuticals and Bristol-Myers Squibb. It was approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in January 2014. Farxiga is one of a series of new medications known as gliflozin drugs, sometimes known as sodium glucose cotransporter 2 (SGLT2) inhibitors.
Farxiga and other SGLT2 inhibitors were approved to lower blood glucose in patients with type-2 diabetes. Unfortunately, Farxiga and other drugs in its class have been linked with some significant side effects.
Farxiga Diabetic Ketoacidosis
The U.S. Food and Drug Administration has received a number of reports from patients over diabetic ketoacidosis. Diabetic ketoacidosis (DKA) is a life-threatening condition that develops when a person’s body cannot get the sugar necessary for energy because of a lack of insulin.
According to the Farxiga side effects lawsuit, patients taking SGLT2 inhibitors are twice as likely to report diabetic ketoacidosis and/or kidney damage than patients taking a non-SGLT2 diabetes treatment option.
Filing a Farxiga Side Effects Lawsuit
A growing number of patients are pursuing diabetes medication lawsuits after suffering from Farxiga diabetic ketoacidosis and other kidney problems.
If you or someone you love has suffered from significant side effects of these drugs, including Farxiga diabetic ketoacidosis, you may be able to file a Farxiga side effects lawsuit. While filing a lawsuit cannot take away the pain and suffering caused by Farxiga diabetic ketoacidosis, it can help to alleviate the financial burden incurred by medical expenses and lost wages.
The Farxiga Side Effects Lawsuit is Case No. 1:17-cv-05709, in the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of New York.
In general, diabetes drug lawsuits are filed individually by each plaintiff and are not class actions.
