It’s been four years in the making, but Clark County, Nevada residents have finally won a class action settlement that will pay to replace defective Kitec piping in their homes. If you own a home in Clark County that contains, or at any time contained, Kitec brass plumbing fittings and/or PlumBetter piping system and/or components, you can make a claim under this class action settlement.
The class action settlement resolves a lawsuit claiming the brass fittings used to connect Kitec pipes are defective and cause zinc to leach from the brass and build up inside the fitting, leading to restricted water flow and weakened fittings that are prone to leaks, breaks and floods. It is believed that the only way to repair this is to completely re-plumb the hot and cold water lines of your home. The class action settlement will pay any out-of-pocket expenses you incur to do this.
The Kitec plumbing system was widely used throughout Clark County, and it’s believed that between 35,000 and 50,000 homes may contain these defective parts. More than a dozen builders used Kitec parts in their developments, including KB Homes, Del Webb, Pulte, Richmond American and Woodside Homes.
If your home contains Kitec or PlumBetter parts, you have until July 31, 2010 to file a claim form. In addition to checking the list of included builders and developments, some homeowners may be able to tell that their homes have Kitec plumbing because they will have a yellow or neon sticker that says “Kitec” or “PlumBetter” on the inside panel of their electrical box; however, all homeowners are encouraged to have their homes inspected to determine if it was plumbed with Kitec.
