Mirena birth control pseudotumor cerebri intracranial hypertension woman headacheA Louisiana couple has filed a Mirena lawsuit against Bayer claiming that her Mirena IUD was the reason behind intense headaches and other complications.

Thirty-year-old plaintiff Stacy B. had a Mirena IUD implanted into her uterus in 2011. According to her Mirena lawsuit, she began experiencing severe headaches, blurred vision, dizziness and double vision not long after the implantation.

About 8 months later, she sought medical help for her symptoms. She was diagnosed with papilledema, a condition in which increased pressure around the brain caused the optic nerve to swell.

At this time, she was referred for diagnostic tests to determine if she had idiopathic intracranial hypertension and pseudotumor cerebri, or IIH/PTC.

Stacy was diagnosed with IIH/PTC by her doctor, according to this Mirena lawsuit, and she believes her IIH/PTC was triggered by the Mirena IUD. She claims that she has been permanently injured, and that she has incurred and will continue to incur medical expenses.

She also believes that she has experienced or will experience past and future pain and suffering, has incurred or will incur lost wages and is subject to an increased risk of future harm.

Stacy brings forth the claims of negligence, design defect, failure to warn, strict liability, breach of express warranty and implied warranty, negligent misrepresentation, fraudulent misrepresentation, fraud by suppression and concealment and loss of consortium in her Mirena lawsuit.

What is Mirena?

Mirena is a hormonal birth control intrauterine device. It is a small, T-shaped device that is placed inside the uterus. Mirena releases a small amount of levonorgestrel into the uterus every day.

Because the hormone does not have to pass through the digestive track before it hits the bloodstream, the amount of hormone is much smaller than that of oral contraception.

The effects of Mirena last for five years. Mirena thins the lining of the uterus which also can decrease menstrual flow for women with Mirena.

Mirena is effective at preventing pregnancy, but it can come with some serious complications. Device migration, pregnancy complications, ectopic pregnancy, pelvic inflammatory disease, device expulsion and pseudotumor cerebri.

What is IIH/PTC?

Idiopathic intracranial hypertension/pseudotumor cerebri is a condition that is characterized by increased pressure around the brain. Experts believe that it is caused by the inability of cerebrospinal fluid to be reabsorbed back into the blood stream.

This increased pressure is often described as a pseudotumor, or “false brain tumor.”

Some symptoms of IIH/PTC are frequent headaches and migraines, ringing in the ears, dizziness or nausea, vomiting, blurred or double vision and vision loss.

If you believe you have suffered from pseudotumor cerebri and have had a Mirena IUD implanted, you may benefit from speaking with an experienced lawyer.

This Mirena Lawsuit is Case No. 1:17-cv- 03630-PAE in the United States District Court for the District of New Jersey, Newark Division.
