baby-powder-lawsuit-settlementA Virginia woman recently won a whopping $110.5 million in a baby powder lawsuit settlement against Johnson & Johnson, whose baby powder she alleged caused her to get cancer.

The baby powder lawsuit settlementwas awarded by a St. Louis jury, and sets a record for the highest award in such a case. The previous record-holder was a $72 million baby powder lawsuit settlement that is currently under appeal. And the lawsuits aren’t slowing down—there are around 2,000 state and federal lawsuits currently waiting in courts over talcum powder products and health concerns, including cancer.

The woman involved in this baby powder lawsuit settlement, plaintiff Lois S., was diagnosed with ovarian cancer in 2012. Lois alleges that her cancer is a direct result of using Johnson & Johnson’s talcum powder-containing baby powder products for a period of over forty years.

Unfortunately, Lois’ cancer has spread to her liver, and she was actually too ill to make it to her trial. Although she couldn’t attend, one of her attorneys said that after hearing of the baby powder lawsuit settlement, she said she hoped it would “send a message.”

In response to this baby powder lawsuit settlement and the others that have come before it, Johnson & Johnson has stated its intent to appeal. “We are preparing for additional trials this year, and we will continue to defend the safety of Johnson’s Baby Powder,” the company said in a statement.

Baby Powder and Ovarian Cancer

Baby powder, most notably baby powder products from Johnson & Johnson, have been widely used for decades. Generations of women have used baby powder products as an essential component of their daily feminine hygiene routines. However, these products are being increasingly linked with ovarian cancer.

Ovarian cancer is a particularly dangerous form of cancer. Ovarian cancer and similar or related cancers are the fifth leading cause of cancer fatalities in United States women, according to the National Cancer Institute. Because there are few early symptoms of ovarian cancer, this disease is usually not discovered until much later, in the last stages of the cancer, which makes this baby powder side effect even more dangerous.

Filing a Baby Powder Cancer Lawsuit

Allegations of consumers diagnosed with ovarian cancer because of talc-based products have caused serious concern among women across the country, many of whom have used these kinds of products regularly for decades.

Plaintiffs claim that being adequately warned about the possibility of developing ovarian cancer after using talcum powder products would have prevented them from using the product, and therefore would have allowed them to avoid ovarian cancer diagnosis altogether.

If you or someone you know has used Johnson’s Baby Powder or a similar powder product containing talc and has since been diagnosed with baby powder ovarian cancer, you may be able to file a claim. A baby powder lawsuit settlement can result in an award of millions.
