bard-blood-clot-filterC.R. Bard, the manufacturers of the G2 Retrievable Inferior Vena Cava Filter, faces an IVC filter dangers lawsuit filed by a Pennsylvania resident who had the medical device inserted in April 2008.

The IVC filter is a medical device surgically implanted into the inferior vena cava to prevent blood clots from advancing into the heart or lungs. According to the plaintiff, Robert T., after the IVC filter was implanted, it became entrenched into his vein, fractured and sent fragmented pieces to his lungs and heart that could not be retrieved. The G2 IVC filter remained in the plaintiff’s body for approximately 8 years.

According to the IVC filter lawsuit, Robert’s IVC filter dangers included “significant injuries, including but not limited to an embedded and migrated filter, fracture of the struts, and migration of those struts to plaintiff’s lung, that occurred as a result of the G2 filter’s failure.”

The plaintiff had the IVC filter implanted by Dr. Keven McCluskey at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center (Shadyside) for the preclusion of PE, or pulmonary embolism. Pulmonary embolism is the condition by which a sudden blockage of one or more blood vessels occurs in the lungs from a blood clot.

This discovery had been made during the procedure by Dr. McCluskey who had tried to remove the embedded G2 IVC filter from the vein on June 16, 2016.

A few weeks prior, the plaintiff had a CT scan that showed the new positioning of the G2 IVC filter. It showed that it had migrated, was improperly situated and was puncturing the inferior vena cava.

Multiple unsuccessful attempts were made to remove the embedded IVC filter. According to the lawsuit, Robert continues to face risks of serious adverse effects and IVC filter dangers.

These IVC filter dangers include the threat of causing the clotting of the blood in a vein or artery of the circulatory system and the risk of thrombosis. Other serious adverse effects and IVC filter dangers include the puncturing of the lungs or heart, severe pain and even sudden death.

Since its introduction on the market in 2005, approximately 160,000 G2 IVC filters have been sold. The FDA reports that it has received nearly 1,000 reports of adverse effects and IVC filter dangers regarding the G2 IVC filter since 2005. These reports are still climbing.

A study reported in the Archives of Internal Medicine claims that there is a 12% fracture rate with the G2 IVC filter.

In 2014, the G2 IVC filter was correlated to the highest fracture risk known. According to the Journal of Vascular Interventional Radiology, reports and researchers approximate that in 5 years roughly 38% of G2 IVC filters fracture.

Plaintiffs reproach C.R. Bard for ineffectively reporting and representing adverse side effects and IVC filter dangers of the G2 IVC filter and for alleged negligence in selling a malfunctioning medical device.

The IVC Filter Dangers Lawsuit is Case No. GD-17-006947, in the Allegheny County Court of Common Pleas, Pennsylvania Civil Division.

In general, IVC filter lawsuits are filed individually by each plaintiff and are not class actions.
