Hernias can be a very painful condition, and most of those who are suffering are willing to undergo whatever procedures may provide relief. Surgical interventions are typically used in order to repair problematic hernias.

Often, these hernias are corrected by the surgeries, but other times patients may experience complications due to hernia mesh implant side effects.

A hernia develops when the tissue in the body becomes damaged or has areas of weakness. The organs can then push through the weakened or damaged tissue and can end up in an area where they shouldn’t be.

Inguinal hernias are the most common, appearing in the groin and accounting for approximately 75% of all hernias, with hiatal hernias, abdominal hernias, femoral hernias and ventral hernias occurring less often.

During hernia surgery, hernia mesh is typically implanted to repair the hernia. Hernia mesh implants act as a patch for the condition, so the original organs are placed back in their proper location. The hernia mesh implant is placed over the weakened tissue so the organ cannot push back from the area.

Hernia Mesh Implant Side Effects

It is unfortunate that all too often, patients may not get fair notice of all of the potential complications that may arise after a particular procedure or medication as prescribed. This can sometimes be the case with a hernia and its related side effects.

Many times, patients do not know that the side effects that they are experiencing after the surgery are not related to the hernia itself, but rather are hernia mesh implant side effects.

One such complication that may arise is rejection of the hernia mesh implant. Anytime something foreign is placed into the body, whether it is a medical device such as a hernia implant or other surgical implants, implantable birth control or other medical interventions, the body can produce a response in reaction to the substance new to the body.

This may lead to a great deal of pain and inflammation due to the body’s rejection of the implanted hernia mesh.

Other complications include hernia mesh migration. The hernia mesh may separate from the location where it was initially placed and may float around the body to another location. This may cause infection and pain at the new location site.

Additionally, hernia shrinkage may occur. If the implant reduces in size, it can pull the areas of attachment together, causing pain and injuries as well as the development of fistulas (abnormal connections in the body which are located between hollow spaces) and seromas (pockets filled with fluid).

Scar tissue and adhesions may also result as complications from hernia mesh implant. These conditions also lead to pain and inflammation.

Other issues have also been reported, including bowel obstruction, intestinal obstruction, nerve damage and organ perforation due to hernia mesh implant side effects.
