AT&T class action lawsuitA proposed class action settlement has been reached in four class action lawsuits against AT&T relating to software “locks” that prevent AT&T cell phones from operating with other compatible wireless carriers’ services. If you owned an AT&T Wireless, Cingular Wireless or AT&T Mobility account between March 12, 1999 and April 2, 2010 and purchased a wireless handset other than Apple iPhone for use with these services, you may be entitled to benefits from this settlement.

The proposed class action settlement doesn’t provide money (except to the lawyers, of course), but you can receive a code that unlocks your handset. According to the settlement notice, these codes will be provided to AT&T customers based on three eligibility requirements:

(1) Customers with postpaid accounts who have completed a minimum of 90 days of active service and are in good standing and current in their payments.

(2) Customers with prepaid accounts who have provided a detailed receipt or other proof of purchase of the handset.

(3) Customers who own handsets for which AT&T has an exclusive sales arrangement with a manufacturer of less than 10 months will have to wait until the 10-month period expires before they can receive an unlocking code.

If you want to opt out of the settlement or object to it, you have until June 4, 2010 to post mark your filing. The final approval hearing will be held July 2, 2010. For more information, visit www.attlockinglawsuits.com.
