Eliquis bleeding complications gastrointestinal hemorrhageA man has filed an Eliquis wrongful death lawsuit against the manufacturers of Eliquis on behalf of his loved one who allegedly suffered sudden death after taking the prescribed anticoagulant medication.

Plaintiff Roy G. filed the Eliquis wrongful death lawsuit in a New York federal court against Bristol-Meyers Squibb and Pfizer Inc., the manufacturers and distributors of Eliquis. Roy is filing the lawsuit on behalf of Mary Ann G., who died after taking Eliquis.

Eliquis, also known by the generic name apixaban, is an anticoagulant used to block blood clots from forming and prescribed to prevent and lower risks of strokes that can occur in people who suffer from a heart rhythm disorder called atrial fibrillation.

It is also prescribed to those who have recently undergone a hip or knee replacement surgery, and is additionally, prescribed to prevent a specific type of blood clot called deep vein thrombosis, or DVT, that can lead to pulmonary embolism; blood clots that form in the lungs.

Roy claims that the drug’s manufacturers masked and obscured their knowledge and facts pertaining to the drug’s side effects. Because that information was withheld, Roy says, Mary Ann suffered from life-threatening bleeding, as well as other permanent and long lasting injuries, mental anguish, and physical pain, the Eliquis lawsuit further claims.

According to Roy, Mary Ann was prescribed and first began using Eliquis in March 2015. She continued taking the medication through approximately June 2015. She eventually suffered from life threatening bleeding and was then caused to sustain permanent pain, injury, and suffering. She died suddenly in late June of 2015.

Several clinical trials were conducted by the defendants to gain approval for the drug by the FDA. But as Roy claims in his Eliquis lawsuit, these clinical trials did not accurately represent data to the FDA that life threatening bleeding can occur with the consumption of Eliquis.

Roy also challenges the lack of an available antidote for Eliquis. His Eliquis lawsuit contends that the drug’s manufacturers failed to adequately warn patients that there was “no agent to reverse the anticoagulation effects of Eliquis and that if serious bleeding occurs, it may be irreversible, permanently disabling, and life threatening.”

According to the Eliquis wrongful death lawsuit, “when warning of safety and risks of Eliquis, defendants negligently and/or fraudulently represented to the medical and healthcare community, the Food and Drug Administration … that Eliquis had been adequately tested and found to be safe and/or effective for its indicated use.”

Eliquis Wrongful Death Lawsuit Challenges Adequacy of Studies

The Eliquis lawsuit alleges that since the defendants had possessed “at least one clinical study” that indicates that life threatening bleeding does occur with the consumption of Eliquis, then they should have known that additional studies and testing were called for before the drug could be introduced into the market and to the public.

The drug’s manufacturers first received FDA approval on December 2012. Additional approval was granted in March 2014 for its use in patients suffering from DVT or pulmonary embolism.

Roy seeks compensatory damages of at least $75,000 for the alleged consequence suffered by his loved one.

The Eliquis Wrongful Death Lawsuit is Case No. 1:17-cv-02526-PGG, in the United States District Court for the Southern District of New York.
