Wal-Mart Faces Massive Sex Discrimination Class Action Lawsuit

By Sarah Pierce

A massive class action lawsuit against Wal-Mart has been approved, making it one of the largest private-gender cases in U.S. history. The lawsuit, filed in 2001, alleges Wal-Mart pays female employees less than male employees for the same jobs, gives them fewer promotions, and makes them wait longer than their male counterparts for promotions. Lawyers representing the class estimate more than 1 million women are covered under this week’s decision, while Wal-Mart estimates fewer than 500,000 can be included in the class. Either way, the approval will expose Wal-Mart to billions of dollars in legal damages. Wal-Mart recently settled another 9-year-old sex discrimination class action lawsuit earlier this year.
