vaginal mesh pelvic mesh complicationsA pelvic mesh lawsuit can be a way to compensation for women who’ve suffered complications after surgery for pelvic organ prolapse.

Transvaginal mesh, or pelvic mesh, is a net like implant that is used to treat medical conditions in women such as stress urinary incontinence or pelvic organ prolapse. These kinds of ailments can develop after a woman has childbirth, menopause, or a hysterectomy.

Pelvic organ prolapse is a condition in which organs in the pelvis descend and press against the walls of the vagina. Stress urinary incontinence can cause a decrease in bladder control during moments of physical exertion. Both these conditions can be treated by implanting a transvaginal mesh that gives needed support to pelvic organs.

Transvaginal mesh was developed from surgical mesh that has been used to repair hernias since the 1950s. In the 1970s, doctors began adapting hernia mesh techniques for treatment of stress urinary incontinence. The first products made specifically for that purpose received FDA approval in the 1990s.

These meshes are typically fashioned out of plastic known as polypropylene. Some types of transvaginal mesh use an amalgamation of things that can even be comprised of animal tissue. The leading manufacturers include Bard, AMS, Ethicon, Boston Scientific, UGYTEX, and Coviden.

In some cases, these implants contributed to serious injuries and complications such as erosion and organ perforation, or the complete penetration of the wall of a hollow organ, such as the gastrointestinal tract. Numerous pelvic mesh lawsuits have been filed due to the injuries suffered from these complications.

Many vaginal mesh products now on the market earned FDA approval through a fast-track approval process known as the 510(k) process. This process applies to new devices that are considered substantially similar to other devices already on the market. Devices approved through this process are not subject to the same rigorous evaluation and clinical studies that the full approval process would require.

Some women who have suffered from serious injury stemming from pelvic mesh complications have had to undergo revision surgery. Such complications originating from the transvaginal mesh implant include and were not limited to infection, vaginal scarring, mesh erosion into the vagina, and perforation of the bladder, bowel, or blood vessels.

Seeking Redress Through a Pelvic Mesh Lawsuit

Attorneys for women filing pelvic mesh lawsuits have been actively seeking compensation for these women’s pain, injuries, mental strife, surgery performed to remove the mesh, and lost income from being unable to work.

Moreover, there have been claims contended in pelvic mesh lawsuits that the transvaginal mesh implant actually serves no benefit for women when treating pelvic organ prolapse, according to the transvaginal mesh attorneys. Transvaginal mesh, or pelvic mesh lawsuits and settlements could result in compensation for the serious internal injuries due to the transvaginal mesh.

Concerns grow even more as more women report serious injuries and complications due to the transvaginal mesh implant and specifically as more women file more transvaginal or pelvic mesh lawsuits.

Spouses of women suffering serious injury and complications from the pelvic mesh may also sue for loss of consortium, a type of claim that seeks compensation for the deprivation of benefits between loved ones or loss of intimacy arising from personal injury cases.
