McAfee Sued in Class Action Lawsuit

By Sarah Pierce

Well, this is sort of ironic. McAfee, one of the most popular producers of internet security software, is being sued for using deceptive pop-up ads — the very thing their products are supposed to eliminate.

A new class action lawsuit accuses McAfee of tricking customers into buying third-party services through a deceptive pop-up ad. After downloading McAfee software from McAfee’s website, a misleading pop-up display that looks like the rest of the McAfee site appears that thanks customers for their purchase and asks them to click a “Try it Now” button, which leads them to “unwittingly enroll in subscription-based services offered by a third party, Arpu, Inc.”

According to the lawsuit, McAfee disguises the purchase as just another step in the process of downloading McAfee software. It also says customers are unaware that they’ve just transmitted their credit/debit card information to Arpu — information they trusted with McAfee — and signed up for a service that charges an automatic renewal fee that’s hard to detect in billing statements. The lawsuit claims details about the terms of service are purposefully hidden in hard-to-read print and that customers are unable to cancel their service by calling Arpu, Inc.

You can read the class action lawsuit here. We’ll keep you updated when details about filing a claim become available.
