Risperdal settlementThousands of consumers across the country claim that Risperdal gynecomastia risks have been concealed from the public and the medical community, leading to more than 5,000 Risperdal lawsuits to date.

Risperdal, generically known as risperidone, is a drug manufactured by Janssen Pharmaceuticals, a subsidiary of Johnson & Johnson. It is approved to treat schizophrenia, bipolar disorder and symptoms of irritability in children diagnosed with autism spectrum disorders.

In addition to its approved uses, Risperdal has also been used to treat a variety of other conditions. Known as “off label” prescribing, drugs can be prescribed for other conditions beyond their FDA approval at a physician’s discretion.

Some physicians have used Risperdal to treat ADHD, depression, post traumatic stress disorder, OCD and dementia, among other conditions.

For some, Risperdal has been a positively life-changing drug bringing about major improvements in themselves or in family members. For others, serious side effects not commonly disclosed, including Risperdal gynecomastia risks, have been the source of devastation for individuals and their loved ones.

Risperdal Gynecomastia Risks

The most devastating side effect experienced by users that has also led to the thousands of products liability lawsuits is the development of gynecomastia in males.

Gynecomastia is the clinical term for the male development of breast growth. Risperdal gynecomastia risks are believed to be a result of a disruption in hormone levels caused by the use of the drug.

Risperdal causes an increase in a hormone known as prolactin. Prolactin stimulates breast development and milk production in lactating women. It is found in lower levels in males, but Risperdal appears to significantly increase this hormone in some male users of the drug.

As a result, males who experience an increase in prolactin levels develop gynecomastia, more commonly known as “man boobs.”

As one can imagine, this can be a psychologically and emotionally devastating experience for boys, young men and adult males. In one severe case, a male developed breasts up to a size 46DD bust.

Stopping treatment with Risperdal may not cause the gynecomastia condition to reverse. The Risperdal gynecomastia risks may persist even once the drug has been terminated. Surgical removal of breast tissue is often the only option for males who develop gynecomastia as a result of Risperdal use.

In addition to Risperdal gynecomastia risks, other breast-related side effects may be seen with Risperdal use. Males may develop painful breasts, experience nipple pain or discharge or may even begin producing milk due to the increased prolactin levels.

Filing a Lawsuit over Risperdal Gynecomastia Risks

As can be expected, Risperdal users who feel they were not adequately warned about Risperdal gynecomastia risks were upset at the manufacturer’s alleged failure in making a safe product and neglect in being truthful about the side effects.

More than 5,400 lawsuits have been filed across the country against Janssen Pharmaceuticals. Some cases have already gone to trial, with awards in the multi-millions to patients who stated they were not aware of Risperdal gynecomastia risks.

The federal government has also been involved with the makers of Risperdal. In November 2013, the company reached a $2.2 billion settlement with the U.S. Justice Department over allegations that it inappropriately marketed Risperdal to children, those with developmental disabilities and the elderly. The company denied the allegations but agreed to the settlement.

If you or a loved one has developed gynecomastia but feel you were not appropriately warned of Risperdal gynecomastia risks, you may be eligible to take legal action against the manufacturer to recover losses related to personal injury.
