Top Class Actions viewers are starting to receive checks in the mail from a class action settlement that accused the maker of Annie Chun’s soup and noodle products of falsely advertising its items with a “No MSG Added” label.
According to reader comments and posts on the Top Class Actions Facebook page, Class Members who submitted timely and valid claims for the Annie Chun’s class action settlement began receiving checks worth as much as $15 on Dec. 31, 2016.
If you filed a claim for the Annie Chun’s “No MSG” settlement, keep an eye on your mailbox because checks are on their way!
The Annie Chun’s settlement resolves allegations that manufacturer CJ America deceived consumers by falsely advertising certain noodle products as containing “100% all natural ingredients” and “No MSG Added.”
The Annie Chun’s items in question included: Chinese Chicken Soup Bowl, Hot & Sour Soup Bowl, Korean Kimchi Soup Bowl, Miso Soup Bowl, Thai Tom Yum Soup Bowl, Udon Soup Bowl, Vietnamese Pho, Garlic Scallion Noodle Bowl, Korean Sweet Chili Noodle Bowl, Kung Pao Noodle Bowl, Pad Thai Noodle Bowl, Peanut Sesame Noodle Bowl, Teriyaki Noodle Bowl, Soy Ginger Ramen, Spicy Chicken Ramen, and Spring Vegetable Ramen.
CJ America denied the allegations brought from this class action lawsuit, but agreed to settle in order to avoid the expenses of ongoing litigation.
Under the terms of the settlement, CJ America agreed to pay a total of $1.5 million to Annie Chun’s soup consumers and remove the term “No MSG” from its prepackaged food labels.
The settlement was proposed in November 2015, but a California federal judge initially rejected it after finding that plaintiff Dennis Peterson didn’t adequately explain why California laws should apply to a nationwide Class.
Following that decision, the parties further negotiated and reached a settlement that was granted preliminary approval in March 2016.
Class Members included all U.S. consumers who bought one (or more) of Annie Chun’s soup or noodle bowls between Nov. 19, 2012 and Mar. 23, 2016.
The deadline to file a claim for the Annie Chun’s No MSG settlement passed on July 20, 2016.
