Despite the widespread popularity of the hypertension drug known as Benicar, reports show that Benicar HCT side effects can be serious and long-lasting.
Indeed, as knowledge of Benicar HCT side effects spreads, more and more patients are filing Benicar lawsuits against manufacturer Daiichi Sankyo, linking the drug with serious side effects such as stomach problems.
As of yet, over 1,250 lawsuits have been filed against Daiichi Sanko over a variety of Benicar HCT side effects, from chronic diarrhea to stomach pain.
What is Benicar HCT?
Benicar HCT (olmesartan medoxomil) is a blood pressure medication widely used to treat hypertension across the United States.
Benicar HCT was approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration for the treatment of hypertension back in 2002, and since its release onto the market has only grown increasingly more popular.
Benicar HCT is one of several olmesartan drugs that have been brought to the market in recent years. Others include Benicar, Tribenzor, and Azor. The popularity of these drugs has skyrocketed. Indeed, by 2012, nearly 2 million people per year filled prescription for olmesartan drugs.
Unfortunately, several studies have shown a strong connection between olmesartan drugs like Benicar HCT and a number of serious stomach problems.
Benicar HCT Side Effects
Benicar HCT side effects can be anywhere between mild to severe, and include, but are not limited to, the following complications:
- Villous atrophy
- Sprue-like enteropathy
- Colitis
- Kidney failure
- Malabsorption
- Malnutrition
- Dehydration
- Diarrhea
- Vomiting/Nausea
- Abdominal pain
After reports and studies began linking Benicar HCT and similar olmesartan products with these serious stomach problems, the FDA responded.
In July 2013, the federal agency issued a Drug Safety Communication warning about Benicar HCT side effects, linking the medication to chronic diarrhea, weight loss, and gastrointestinal issues. The FDA also introduced several label changes to reflect their acknowledgement of these potential Benicar HCT side effects.
Despite the fact that Benicar HCT has been widely available and commonly prescribed for over a decade, the sudden change in its label warning came as a surprise to many Benicar users. The warning even came as a surprise to some doctors who had not been aware of the risk of these Benicar HCT side effects.
Benicar HCT Side Effects Lawsuits
Injured plaintiffs claim in their Benicar lawsuits that the drug’s manufacturers, Daiichi Sankyo and Forest Laboratories, either knew or should have known about the risk of stomach problems linked with their drug, yet failed to adequately warn the public and the medical community about serious Benicar HCT side effects.
Lawsuits further claim that, once the manufacturers became aware of the risk, they continued to market the drug as safe and effective in ways that were potentially misleading to consumers. Indeed, plaintiffs allege that, given adequate warning about the possibility of these side effects, they would have chosen a safer alternative.
If you or someone you love has suffered from Benicar HCT side effects, you may be able to file a Benicar lawsuit.
Filing a lawsuit cannot take away the pain and suffering of Benicar HCT side effects, but it can help to compensate for any financial expenses incurred through medical bills or even lost wages.
