HyundaiHyundai has agreed to a class action lawsuit settlement with U.S. customers who say they were misled into buying Hyundai vehicles based on window stickers that contained overinflated fuel economy figures.

The amount of the Hyundai fuel economy settlement, filed yesterday in Los Angeles federal court, was not disclosed, but court documents show the proposed deal will provide Hyundai owners the option of a lump-sum payment. Hyundai’s sister company, Kia – which was also sued for overstating MPG estimates – is reportedly evaluating whether to join the class action lawsuit settlement.

The South Korean automakers were sued late last year after the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) announced the companies had overstated the gas mileage on over a third of their 2011-2013 model-year vehicles, including the Hyundai Elantra, Hyundai Santa Fe and Kia Soul. The EPA forced the companies to lower the vehicles’ MPG ratings on their window stickers by one to six miles per gallon.

The automakers blamed the discrepancies on “procedural errors” at a joint testing facility in South Korea.

Over 35 consumer lawsuits were filed against Hyundai and Kia over what is being dubbed “MPG Gate.”

This is my second post post about the Hyundai class action settlement regarding overstated MPG on 2009-2012 Genesis, Equus cars purchased prior to November 2012.
I am the owner of a 2012 Genesis that was purchased in May, 2012 and registered with Hyundai for the gas mileage program. Only two prior submissions were made and the mileage was low. I now have around 30,000 miles and recently took it to my Hyundai dealership for 2 recall items and requested they submit mileage for reimbursement. I have been stonewalled by the dealership and Hyundai, Menlo Park. After searching the net I find that a class action lawsuit has been concluded. I had no knowledge of this and was not a party to this lawsuit. Does anyone know if the lawsuit was filed by the EPA or if a private law firm was involved. I would like to determine if I have any recourse in receiving what was promised and owed by Hyundai.
