Mirena Brain Side EffectsThe Mirena IUD (intrauterine device) is an incredibly popular contraceptive in America, which has been linked to a number of serious complications.

Mirena brain side effects have become the topic of recent discussion, with numerous women reporting the serious condition known as pseudotumor cerebri or idiopathic intracranial hypertension.

Pseudotumor cerebri is caused by abnormally large levels of cerebrospinal fluids building up in the skull, which can lead to major headaches or other Mirena brain side effects.

While this condition has been linked in several other contraceptives, the Mirena IUD has been mentioned in a significant number of injury reports.

At this time, the exact cause of pseudotumor cerebri is not known but certain contraceptives like the Mirena IUD has been alleged to increase the chances.

Overview of Mirena Brain Side Effects

The Mirena IUD is a small T-shaped device that is directly implanted into the woman’s uterus that can last up to five years, with the exact understanding of its interaction with the patient’s body not fully understood.

Essentially, this means that the full side effects of the device may not be fully understood or discovered by scientists.

As mentioned before, the exact cause of pseudotumor cerebri is not known but it is most likely caused by the body having trouble reabsorbing cerebrospinal fluid back into the bloodstream.

However when the cerebrospinal fluid builds up in the skull, it may develop into pseudotumor cerebri.

The Mirena brain side effects associated with pseudotumor cerebri include, but not limited to are:

  • Frequent headaches or migraines forming blind the eyes and worsen with eye movement
  • Ringing in the ears that pulsate with heart beat, making a “whooshing” sound
  • Nausea or Dizziness
  • Blurred vision, double vision, or blind spots
  • Vision loss in one or both eyes, and other eyesight problems
  • Difficult walking
  • Becoming forgetful
  • Depression

Due to the nature of these symptoms, pseudotumor cerebri is also known as “false brain tumor.

Women often report their Mirena brain side effects during activities of exertion like exercise, due to the increased pressure in the skull.

Oftentimes this condition is diagnosed with diagnostic image testing like MRI or CT scan, eye exam, and spinal tap.

Depending on the severity of the patient’s condition, there can be several treatment options available. If diagnosed early, medications may be used to control the symptoms but a shunt may be needed to treat the overall buildup.

Even though these Mirena brain side effects are serious, Bayer had allegedly failed to warn patients against these complications.

Patients who suffered Mirena brain side effects may be able to file legal action, and should contact a specialized lawyer to determine eligibility.
