onglyzaOnglyza, a popular type-2 diabetes drug, has been associated with a myriad of adverse side effects, one of which may be Onglyza cancer.

What is Onglyza?

Onglyza, generically known as saxagliptin, belongs to a class of drugs known as incretin mimetics, which stimulate the production of insulin in the pancreas to help regulate blood sugar levels in type-2 diabetes patients.

It was approved by the FDA in 2009. Paired with a healthy diet and exercise, Onglyza was designed to help control high blood sugar in patients with type-2 diabetes but who also do not suffer from diabetic ketoacidosis.

Ketoacidosis occurs when increased ketones are found in the blood and urine.

One particular benefit to Onglyza is that, unlike other diabetes medications, Onglyza does not carry with it the same risk of weight gain.

In 2015, Onglyza reached $786 million in sales and is projected to reach almost $2.5 billion by 2018.

Onglyza belongs to a class of drugs called DPP-4 inhibitors. These drugs, including Onglyza, help the pancreas to secrete more insulin and prevent the liver from making excess sugar.

DPP-4s, including Onglyza, have been called “the new darlings” of diabetes treatments. They have been called the biggest breakthrough since insulin was discovered over 100 years ago. Onglyza, along with other DPP-4 drugs, are popularly prescribed.

However, Onglyza and other similar type-2 diabetes drugs have been connected with some serious side effects.

Onglyza Cancer and Other Serious Side Effects

It’s possible Onglyza may be linked to several serious side effects including heart failure, pancreatitis and Onglyza cancer.

Pancreatitis is the inflammation of the pancreas that can lead to hospitalization and in some cases, death. The FDA has received reports of Onglyza patients suffering from acute pancreatitis.

Onglyza has also been linked to heart failure. Onglyza patients have been found to have an increased risk for heart failure and it is suggested that those who have experienced heart problems in the past should avoid Onglyza.

Onglyza cancer is also a concern for those taking the drug. Pancreatic cancer is one of the most serious complications that may be connected with Onglyza use.

A study done in 2013 found increased pre-cancerous pancreatic cells in the autopsied bodies of those who had taken incretin drugs. In the March 2013 journal of Diabetes, researchers analyzed autopsies performed on 20 people who had diabetes, including 8 who used an incretin mimetic drug.

This study found that patients who took incretin drugs had an increased number and size of beta cells in the pancreas. These cells are responsible for secreting insulin.

If a patient has type-2 diabetes, those beta cells shrink or die and cannot produce insulin any longer.

The study also found small, non-cancerous tumors called adenomas that can become malignant. The results also showed that the pancreas that was 40% larger than normal.

If you or a loved one has been adversely affected by Onglyza use, you may be entitled to compensation.

In general, Onglyza lawsuits are filed individually by each plaintiff and are not class actions.
