liver failure liver disease Zithromax Zmax Z-Pak azithromycinZithromax (azithromycin) is one of America’s most preferred medications, but has been linked to a number of serious complications.

Zithromax liver problems are amongst the side effects reported, inciting concern in both the patient population and medical community.

The main ingredient of Zithromax, azithromycin, is processed directly through the liver, creating a possibility of liver complications.

Approved by the FDA in 1992, Zithromax is manufactured by pharmaceutical giant Pfizer Inc. and has since remained at the top of the antibiotic market.

This medication is popularly prescribed to both adults and children to treat a variety of bacterial infections including middle ear infections, pneumonia, bronchitis, and respiratory infections.

The popularity of Zithromax has been attributed to the drug’s short prescription period of five days, compared to the typical ten days.

In addition, the unique treatment mechanism of Zithromax also makes the drug exceedingly popular.

Instead of killing the bacterial cells outright, Zithromax inhibits the cells’ reproductive functions and forces the remaining bacteria to die out.

Even though this medication has helped millions of patients, Zithromax has been linked to a number of severe side effects.

The Zithromax liver problems reported include liver damage, elevated liver enzymes, jaundice, and even death.

Pfizer allegedly began receiving reports of Zithromax liver problems soon after its release, with the company allegedly knowing the risk as early as 1998.

After the FDA received numerous injury reports of Zithromax liver problems, the agency required Pfizer to add liver problems to the drug’s warning label in 2000.

By 2001, the FDA had also required Pfizer to add jaundice as well as liver failure or death to the label for Z-Pak, a specially packaged course of azithromycin.

Overview of Chronic Liver Complications

Chronic liver problems can be potentially fatal if not treated properly, and it can be linked to a number of causes.

Liver damage can often be attributed to alcohol or chemical poisoning, but has also been linked to certain medications.

Patients who begin experiencing odd symptoms after taking Zithromax or any other medications should contact their physician immediately.

Early signs of liver damage include:

  • Jaundice (Yellowing Skin and Eyes)
  • Fatigue
  • Abdominal Pain
  • Loss of Appetite
  • Nausea and Vomiting
  • Weight Loss
  • Dark Colored Urine
  • Clay Colored Stool

If the damage is serious enough, a liver transplant may be necessary to prevent death.

Used as a last resort in the case of chronic liver damage or end stage liver disease, a new liver is transplanted into the patient’s body to resume the necessary filtration process.

Patients who may have experienced Zithromax liver problems may be able to file a legal action. Potential claimants should contact a knowledgeable Zithromax lawyer to determine eligibility for a Zithromax lawsuit.
