liverNo one visiting the doctor for a simple earache, urinary tract infection, STI or other run-of-the-mill bacterial infection expects that he or she will end up needing a liver transplant.

However, some patients using Zithromax may be unpleasantly surprised.

For some patients taking the popular antibiotic, Zithromax liver side effects may be so severe that patients may require a liver transplant due to the damage that the antibiotic inflicts on the liver.

What is Zithromax?

Zithromax is a macrolide antibiotic that is used to treat a variety of bacterial infections. It is used in the treatment of ear infections, urinary infections, sexually transmitted infections, respiratory infections, skin infections and more.

Patients often request Zithromax antibiotic by name because it is powerful and it requires a much shorter course of treatment than traditional antibiotics.

While most antibiotic courses are between 10 and 14 days, a typical course of Zithromax antibiotic is only five days.

Referred to as a Z-pak, or azithromycin, patients and physicians alike appreciate the convenient dosing of this antibiotic. Other formulations may include a three-day course or even a single megadose.

Moreover, where other antibiotics work by killing the bacteria in the body, Zithromax works by halting the reproduction of bacteria in the body.

When reproduction is halted enough, the body’s own natural immune system is then able to take over and fight off the remaining infection.

Zithromax Side Effects

As with any medication, Zithromax comes with a number of side effects. Typically, these side effects are mild and transient and will disappear quickly after the body gets used to the medication or after the medication is stopped.

Common Zithromax side effects include nausea, vomiting, fatigue, itching skin, stomach pain, headache, insomnia, ringing in ears, anxiety and vaginal discharge.

These symptoms will typically go away on their own without any need for intervention.

More severe side effects are also associated with Zithromax use. Stevens Johnson Syndrome, a life-threatening drug allergy, has been linked to Zithromax use. It can occur with the first dose of the antibiotic or even following the use of the antibiotic many times with no previous ill effects.

Zithromax has also been linked to kidney and liver damage. Both conditions can become so severe that a kidney transplant or liver transplant is needed.

Zithromax Liver Side Effects

Patients should be on the lookout for any potential Zithromax liver side effects. Indications that Zithromax is affecting your liver include:

  • Jaundice (yellow eyes and skin)
  • Dark urine
  • Fever
  • Fatigue
  • Abdominal pain
  • Nausea
  • Lab testing that shows elevated liver enzymes

Some of these symptoms of liver toxicity may not even appear to be serious signs, such as fatigue, stomach pain and nausea, as they are also considered mild side effects of the drug.

It is typically not until liver injury has progressed that other signs and symptoms, such as jaundice, show up.

In cases where the Zithromax-induced liver disease has progressed too far to be reversed, a liver transplant may be the only option left to treat the patient.
