Vaginal mesh erosion symptoms are some of the most serious and frequently reported problems in patients who had the products implemented to treat personal health problems.
More specifically, women suffering from weakened pelvic muscles had the vaginal mesh implanted to help them live relatively uninterrupted lives.
Vaginal mesh is a hammock-like piece of mesh that is implanted though the vagina to help support pelvic organs.
The most common conditions women contend with when researching different vaginal mesh options is pelvic organ prolapse (POP) and stress urinary incontinence (SUI).
POP is described when one of more pelvic organs sink into the vaginal area, while SUI occurs when the muscles surrounding the bladder weaken resulting in urinary control trouble.
Both of these conditions can occur when the base pelvic muscles in the woman become damaged, sometimes through traumatic injury like childbirth.
When vaginal mesh was first innovated in the 1950s for hernia repair, women would frequently ask to have the product implemented to treat these personal health conditions. However it was not long after vaginal mesh became popular for this use that women reported vaginal mesh erosion symptoms, along with other serious complications.
Overview of Vaginal Mesh Erosion Symptoms
Vaginal mesh erosion occurs when the device grates through the vaginal wall, and occasionally the surrounding organs. The vaginal mesh erosion symptoms patients commonly reported include:
- Damage to the bladder
- Recto-vaginal fistula (Damage to the small tunnel that connects the rectum and vagina, causing the device to move out of place)
- Abscess Formation
- Intense Pain
- Infection
- Nerve Damage
- Painful Intercourse
Vaginal mesh erosion symptoms can also lead to exposure, also called extrusion, which means that the mesh may be externally visible.
This can also cause recurring urinary tract infections, and other chronic complications that lead to interference with every day life.
Oftentimes, vaginal mesh erosion symptoms and other mesh complications force the patients to have the devices removed.
This prolongs the recovery process, and often requires additional surgeries. According to the FDA, there were 4,000 vaginal mesh complications submitted by 2011 over the six previous years.
Even though the FDA had previously warned the public and medical community of vaginal mesh complications in 2008, the agency stated these injuries were rare at the time.
The FDA had updated its warning to state that vaginal mesh complications were not rare, and that doctors and surgeons should be aware of the risks of using vaginal mesh for POP and SUI.
Even though vaginal mesh erosion symptoms and other mesh complications are serious problems for patients, manufacturers allegedly failed to disclose the risks to patients.
Women who suffered mesh complications or vaginal mesh erosion symptoms may be eligible to file legal action, and should contact a specialized lawyer.
