Vaginal-MeshAn injured California woman recently filed a lawsuit against Boston Scientific, alleging the company’s vaginal mesh sling caused serious injury.

According to the lawsuit, the plaintiff, Donna S., was implanted on February 22, 2006 with an Obtryx Mesh Sling System, a kind of vaginal mesh sling manufactured by Boston Scientific Corp.

Donna was implanted with the vaginal mesh sling product in order to treat her pelvic organ prolapse, or POP. The Obtryx Mesh Sling System and other vaginal mesh sling products like it are mark marketed for the treatment of POP.

Unfortunately, shortly after being implanted with the vaginal mesh sling, Donna S. began suffering from a variety of injuries, including but not limited to pelvic pain, infection, and urinary problems.

These injuries forced the plaintiff to undergo additional and unexpected medical treatment, including surgery, the lawsuit claims. Some of these injuries are permanent.

The lawsuit alleges that these injuries were caused as a direct result of the implantation of the vaginal mesh sling, and would have been avoided had the product not been defective.

The vaginal mesh sling lawsuit was filed on multiple counts, including negligence, defective design, failure to warn, breach of express and implied warranties, common law fraud, and negligent misrepresentation, among others.

Vaginal Mesh Sling Complications

Vaginal mesh sling products, also known as bladder slings, are used to repair pelvic organ prolapse (POP) as well as female stress urinary incontinence (SUI).

Over a hundred thousand vaginal mesh lawsuits have been filed across the United States by women who have experienced a variety of severe and painful complications from these vaginal mesh sling devices.

For some women, the vaginal mesh sling even eroded through the walls of the vagina, which causes infections and other dangerous complications.

Mesh erosion occurs when mesh breaks apart and passes through the vaginal wall, which causes bleeding, severe pain, infection, and even nerve damage.

Organ perforation is not a separate complication, but instead is the second and more dangerous stage of mesh erosion.

Once the mesh erodes through the vaginal wall, it can perforate other organs with its jagged edge, which can result in permanent and painful damage.

Defective and dangerous vaginal mesh products have incited a rising number of lawsuits in recent years.

This is in part due to the 2011 FDA warning about the thousands of adverse event reports the agency had received between January 2008 and December 2010 dealing with vaginal mesh sling products.

The FDA found that, while vaginal mesh sling implants are often marketed as the safest and most effective products for treating pelvic organ prolapse, there is actually no evidence indicating that vaginal mesh is safer or more effective than traditional POP treatment.

The FDA warned vaginal mesh sling manufacturers in 2012 that they should conduct further vaginal mesh studies to determine the safety and efficacy of their products to their female clientele.

Vaginal mesh sling lawsuits have been settled for hundreds of millions of dollars in recent years.

If you or someone you love has experienced complications from a vaginal mesh sling used to treat SUI, POP, or something else, you may have cause to file a vaginal mesh sling lawsuit.

The Vaginal Mesh Sling Lawsuit is Case No. 2:2016-cv-05519., in the U.S. District Court for the District of Massachusetts, Eastern Division .
