Bactrim-SJSIn a recent case of Bactrim Stevens Johnson Syndrome, a young boy only three years of age nearly lost all of his skin from this deadly reaction.

This extremely rare allergic drug reaction can occur from a number of medications, and can be especially deadly to younger patients.

The boy’s parents described him looking akin to a burn victim with severe injuries, which was allegedly caused by the antibiotic prescribed to him. The antibiotic was supposed to treat a simple ear infection, but had evolved into battle for the boy’s life.

Bactrim(sulfamethoxazolem), the antibiotic prescribed, is used to treat a large variety of bacterial infections.

Even though Bactrim can be prescribed to children, it is recommended that the child is at least two months of age due to the drug’s potential side effects.

After taking Bactrim,  the boy started experiencing skin loss just days after starting the medication.

Overview of Bactrim Stevens Johnson Syndrome Case

According to the boy’s mother Julie, her son’s skin had broken out in blisters and required emergency medical care to save his life.

The boy had reportedly spent four weeks in the hospital for treatment of Bactrim Stevens Johnson Syndrome, with his skin peeling off from the hospital sheets.

Julie stated that Bactrim Stevens Johnson Syndrome had destroyed the top layer of his skin and caused him to be put into a coma for 10 days to cope with the pain.

Initially his doctors had misdiagnosed the severity of the allergic reaction, and had given him an antihistamine.

Just 12 hours later the boy was in serious pain and had to be rushed to the emergency room, could not open his eyes and had blisters in his mouth.

When he was diagnosed with Bactrim Stevens Johnson Syndrome, doctors began administering the life saving SJS treatment.

Even though the young boy survived his Bactrim Stevens Johnson Syndrome experience, he and his family are highly scarred from the experience.

The boy’s parents are now fearful he may have a similar reaction as he did with Bactrim Stevens Johnson Syndrome, with Julie eventually being diagnosed with post traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) after seeing her son’s experience.

Both she and her husband now read drug labels very rigorously, and are vigilant for any early signs of Stevens Johnson Syndrome. As horrendous as the little boy’s experience with Bactrim Stevens Johnson Syndrome was,  other patients who experience SJS often do not live to tell the tale.

At this point in time, doctors are unsure why only certain patients are affected by Stevens Johnson Syndrome or what medications may induce the reaction.
