Scientific research indicates that talc-based products used for feminine hygiene purposes can lead to an increased risk of developing ovarian cancer, lung cancer or other cancers.
Johnson and Johnson talcum powder is one of the leading consumer brands of talc-based powder. However, numerous studies have suggested a link between use of Johnson and Johnson talcum powder products and various types of cancer.
Talcum Powder and Ovarian Cancer
According to several studies, women using Johnson and Johnson talcum powder and other talc-based products in and around their genital areas may be more likely to develop cancer.
At least four decades of scientific research have shown that women who use talc-based products like Johnson and Johnson talcum powder products likes Shower to Shower or Johnson’s Baby Powder are at an increased risk for developing ovarian cancer.
Much of this research indicates that once talcum powder is applied, the mineral can reportedly travel into the vagina where it can eventually make its way into the ovaries. As a result, the ovaries may recognize this foreign substance and attempt to fight off the mineral by becoming inflamed and irritated.
In fact, the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC), a part of the World Health Organization, classifies the use of talc-based powders on the genital region as “possibly carcinogenic to humans.”
Although the additional risk, if any, of ovarian cancer would be very small, the American Cancer Society suggests that women may want to avoid or limit the use of products containing talc.
Talcum Powder and Lung Cancer
Some studies have linked the talc exposure to lung cancer. According to the American Cancer Society, the principal concern is whether talc miners or others who have had long-term exposure to particles of the mineral are at higher risk of lung cancer as a result of breathing them in.
The primary question is whether talc itself might be at fault or whether small amounts of asbestos that occur with some kinds of talc are the problem. However, the American Cancer Society notes that no increased risk of lung cancer has been reported with consumer use of talcum powder, like Johnson and Johnson talcum powder.
Talcum Powder and Other Cancers
Additionally, while the use of talc powder has not been definitively linked to other types of cancer due to limited research, at least one study suggests that talcum powder may be linked to an increased risk of uterine cancer in post-menopausal women.
However, this link has been disputed in other studies and further research is needed for a more conclusive connection.
